August 2024 Heritage Auction

Did anyone else get the mailer stating that the upcoming August auction will be the biggest in the hobby since the Halper auction in 1999? (Their words, not mine.) Don’t know if that will be the case or not, but it sounds exciting to watch!

Yea, I received the same mailer promotion from Heritage.

Topnotchsy 06-09-2024 04:37 PM

I believe they have the Ruth jersey which they are saying is photomatched to the 'called shot' game valued at $30M. That alone would carry the auction if it gets near that. Looking forward to seeing what else is there of course.

Edit: Just checked and there are jerseys of Gehrig, Jackie Robinson, Jimmie Foxx and Willie Mays, along with a Ruth signed bat from 1921 and a Joe Jackson rookie bat, which they say is the only known bat from his in the league.

Wow...

Agreed some amazing items already

I think we need to take A net54 collection to bid big

Yes, should be one for the ages...as per my post in the Babe Ruth Called Shot Jersey thread...I've consigned my Mickey Mantle Game Used Bat (Triple Crown Era) to this auction (Heritage's August Platinum Sale).

As others have mentioned above, there's some really incredible pieces in the auction (Ruth Called Shot Jersey, Jackie Robinson Jersey, Gehrig Jersey, Ruth Bat, Shoeless Joe Bat, DiMaggio Jersey, etc, etc). I'm honored. Will be exciting!

I once owned a Mantle bat that had been made into a table leg. I knew it when I bought it and thought it wouldn't bother me, but it did. I ended up selling it and upgrading to a Mantle gamer that hadn't been made into furniture.

Good luck with the auction!

Not sure I would be quoting Halper IRT to an auction.

Heritage August Auction

Yes, there will be some incredible jerseys and bats in the auction but don't for get cards.

There will be E107 Breisch Williams cards of Christy Mathewson and Honus Wagner. plus some very rare T206 White Borders including a Broad Leaf George Moriarty! Just graded recently, it is the first so far, the only one graded by PSA! Plus, all new to the hobby T206s of Spike Shannon and Jake Pfiester/Seated both with Carolina Brights backs, Tommy Leach/Fielding with a Uzit back (Only six are noted on the PSA census) and a Josh Clarke with a Drum back (Only three have been graded by PSA)!

jjbond 07-09-2024 07:54 AM

It looks like it’ll be a fun auction, and it’ll be my first time consigning a card! I sent in the last DiMaggio card from his playing days, as he announced his retirement during the Japan tour.

Cards in the August Auction

I know everyone loves rookie cards but I m different. I love the last cards of players. Thank you "JJbond" for consigning that card. It was fun finding out about the 1951 All-Star tour and I had no idea DiMaggio announced his retirement after the tour.

Yes, the jerseys we have is incredible but there are a lot of great cards. Matty and Wagner E107s, a run of Ruth cards including E121, E122, W575-1 and W575-2, 1928 Sweetman and a signed 1933 Goudey. Not to mention a nice selection of rare T206s...

Good Luck.

vintagerookies51 07-09-2024 02:53 PM

I'm assuming these items will be on display at the National? I'm already planning on attending, but seeing some of these items in person would be an added bonus. Some unreal jerseys and cards

August Platinum is going to be huge. Of course the Ruth "called shot" jersey along with several other high profile jerseys. Also some more higher end cards from the pre war Ramsburg collection. I consulted on the Southside Bobby period autograph collection that will start to be sold in August. Looking forward to seeing the Ruth jersey at Nationals.

2x in the last month I filled out a consignment sheet for Heritage to consign a mid 60s Willie Mays game used bat. Never heard a thing from them...

Bicem 07-20-2024 03:17 PM

Incredible stuff
Placed some bids I been waiting to add
A whole month to watch

puckpaul 07-21-2024 08:22 AM

Some incredibly cool stuff. Nothing for me really, trying to finish some sets with tough cards and none in the auction.

To each his own, but I find hyperbolic descriptions annoying on many lots. Not uncommon for many auctions.

Topnotchsy 07-21-2024 09:29 AM

Does anyone know if a major collector (or multiple major collectors) are selling out in this auction?

I went through the all the listings and the scope of what is here is astounding. At first glance I was blown away by the huge jerseys etc, but looking deeper there's some incredibly rare and obscure items at different levels. Tons of really cool historic items (Aaron 714 GU bases, Ruth Red Sox photos, Jackie debut ticket, Ron Lewis 500 HR Club original painting, Frank Robinson 500th HR bat as a few examples).

Many are items I've never seen sold publicly before, so I'm wondering if a portion of them were in a few collections for decades.

Republicaninmass 07-21-2024 10:27 AM

Top of the market when even super collectors say it's time to sell. Opinion only not investment advice:

These are indeed awesome with the player’s total career stats. A signed version is even better!

I know a few different consignors of some of the higher end items, think the auction is a few pieces from many different consignors. Have a few photos in there myself.

There are some great press pins available at the August Platinum Auction at Heritage!

I'm sure it will pick up this week with the auction starting to end Friday, but overall prices seem pretty low on cards and photos (can't speak to anything else).

$24.12 million.

According to Ace…

Topnotchsy 08-25-2024 11:13 AM

Prices have been interesting (to me anyways).

Surprised by how low the Frank Robinson 500 HR bat went for, though it reinforces how underrated he is. Robin Yount's 3000th hit bat sold not long ago for $100K more.

I thought $40K for the Musial jersey seemed like a great deal.

1952 topps mantle psa 8 sold for $1,380,000 in heritage last night. Went for more than previous few sales of psa 8. As a result, this should increase the value of lower grade 52 topps mantles.

jjbond 08-25-2024 06:35 PM

Still following my first consignment. This is far more exciting than listing something on ebay with a "buy it now" :)

That's not how it works. A few years ago, the PSA 8 was going for 2M and then dropped significantly, but the lower grades were not impacted by this at all.

The mid grades will go up in value. Not grades of 1 or authentic.

Disagree with your logic. There are only 30 PSA 8 Mantles, which greatly impacts availability. I don't see how this impacts mid grade mantles at all. Apples to Oranges.

Rising tides lift all boats. If PSA 8 goes up, then PSA 6 should follow and benefit.

Schlesinj 08-26-2024 08:34 AM

Did anyone see the Rickey Henderson PSA 10 and SGC 9.5 price difference?

Rhotchkiss 08-26-2024 09:11 AM

Almost all of the stuff I wanted/bid on, and watched closely, in Heritage blew well beyond my higher-end estimates. Specifically, the E107 Wagner and Mathewson. I was the immediate underbidder on the Wagner and in the mix for the Matty, and I was motivated. But they both got to a price I felt was nonsensical and I let them go. It sucks when you think for months you will own something, but get left at the altar bid night.

Regarding the 1952 Topps Mantle, specifically mid-lower grades -- I generally agree that a rising tide lifts all boats. Plus, it seems that Mantle is particularly hot right now. That said, there are very many 1952 Topps Mantles available and I think that will impact the "rising tide". This past Heritage auction had 3, not including the signed one, and the next Heritage auction has 5, not including the one in the complete set. Memory Lane has a 3.5. REA had 3. There are over 25 different 1952 Topps Mantles on Ebay. 1952 Mantles are common, especially in sub-5 grades.

By contrast, high-grade Mantles are not common. Indeed, they are fairly rare. I think the rarity/common disparity will serve to push higher-grade Mantles, while he is especially hot, but put a lid on the growth of lower-mid grade examples.

Good looking, well-centered examples are an exception -- these, too, are harder to come by and I think they are the boats that will be lifted by the rising tide of high-grade Mantle sales.

NYYFan63 08-26-2024 09:29 AM

Can someone explain why the T206 Cy Young portrait PSA 4 went for $11k? I know its from the Ramsburg Collection but wow!

Touch'EmAll 08-26-2024 09:41 AM

I was just going to ask the same thing - about the T206 Cy Young portrait. The back was Sweet Caporal 150/25 - is that a rare back and the reason it went so high ? Or the Ramsburg connection (which the PSA label does not designate) ? It went for over $11.k over double what other recent PSA 4's have sold for.

And the 1935 Wheaties Gehrig, thought I had a chance at reasonable price. Sigh, not to be. I have always wanted on of these orange beauties. I kick myself for not picking up a nice copy when I had the chance years ago.

I agree with you that higher grade 52 mantles since they have smaller population from PSA 5 and above will appreciate at a higher rate then lower grades sub 5 which are more common. And yes good looking well centered ones will always command a premium.

Factory 25 can be difficult. SC 150, 25 is a little tougher. SC 350, 25 can sometimes be downright impossible. I finished a Tinker bat off back run (currently being sold in Memory Lane) and the SC 350, 25 was hand down one of the tougher ones.

That said, I have come to believe that when we see results like this, its a card doctor who feels they will alter the card and make a profit (after PSA grades it a 7 post alteration).

I had the same thought. Someone plans to take the card for a dip in Kurt’s magic elixir for a hefty profit.

Exactly - that's what I'm trying to tell him. Apples and oranges. When the PSA 8 went from 2M to 1.5M and then close to 1M, then the mid-grades should've dropped too then, right? But that's not what happened. Mid and lower grades just kept going up.

Mid and lower grades will go up even more now as the psa 8 went up which is common sense. Since according to you they still went up when the psa 8 was going down they will go up even faster now with psa 8 going back up.

There is no connection between the two! The PSA 8 could sell for $900,000 USD next time and the PSA 4 might still keep going up! Why is it so hard to understand what I'm trying to say ??
