1968 Topps question

1 Attachment(s)
Someone on Facebook claims they had a ‘68 Topps card which had a factory sticker updating the team name. Have any of you ever heard of this?

NEVER heard of anything like this...

Been collecting cards for over 50 years and never heard of it. As 11 year olds in 1968 my cousin and I opened many packs from all the series and never saw this.

Topps was thrifty (cheap) and putting stickers on an individual card or cards was expensive, time consuming and unnecessary. The cards were selling without any sticker. Why incur an additional cost with no additional profit?

Eric---Can you ask him on that site if from a pack ? If not, any chance it was not a "factory' addition. Add me to not aware of such a Topps update. You might touch base with Dave Hornish.

I looked for that post but could not locate it

I really doubt such thing ever came from Topps, but am curious if he posted a pic of the sticker-- is it round and have the same coloring and font for Lou's new team or just some generic label?
I'm with the others here-- not only have I never heard of such a thing but it makes little economic sense, unless they were prototyping factory or "update" sets several years earlier than known. Even then one would think that this would be more widely known than this seemingly sole example.

I have “I Heard Her Call My Name” playing in my mind as I type this, one of the greatest guitar solos of all time.

Lou Johnson was traded on June 28 1968 by the Cubs to the Indians for Willie Smith (actually a good trade for the Cubs), that is way too late in the season for Topps to have made any kind of update, I’m guessing it was a decent quality sticker some enterprising collector made for it.

I posted your question. Let’s see if he replies.

There’s a non-zero chance it’s a fabricated story to create hype for a soon-to-be-created fantasy card. Figured I’d check here first, though. Nobody knows everything. There was a chance it was a legit variation and I had never heard of it before.
