Fake 1950 Remar with a black back
 

I bought a fake for the first time in my lifetime in the hobby. It was $1.99 on eBay for my set and I didn't really look carefully at all, so it's 100% my fault. Gave it a glance, saw it was intact and $1.99, and bought it. Card is on thinner stock, the image has the characteristics of a cheap copy with some loss of detail, and the back is black instead of blue. Pretty clearly a copy.

I did not realize there were fake low grade common 1950 Remars at all even. Funny thing is the card originally never arrived, and I ignored it because it ain't worth it for $1.99 and I consider .1% of packages or so lost to just be part of the cost of doing a hobby. The post service returned it to the seller, who sent me a note and we had a nice chat about the joys of the hobby and how he pulled Remar's out of the bread packages as a young boy but his grandkids don't have any interest in cards before he mailed it again.

I suspect this was not one of those cards he pulled...

Getting a laugh when I opened the envelope was worth the $2. Weird card to make a copy of. Anyone got a cheap Remar Galan to sell to a moronic buyer? :)

I wonder what the "SH-64" means on the back. What that typed on the card?

It does not appear to be typed onto the card after it was produced, but to be part of the original production of this fake.

Old reprints and copies are kind of interesting, I hope somebody might recognize it. This marker that looks like an ID number of some kind suggests to me this may have been part of a crude reprint issue of some kind and not just a random one-off ran on a copier?

"SH-64" may mean Sports Hobbyist - 1964, unless "64" refers to the 64th card in his series of reprints. Publisher Charles Brooks did indeed create some reprints, in harmony with his publishing Sport Hobbyist.

However, given that nearly all of our pioneer collectors are deceased at this point, you likely won't be able to confirm anything. Reminds me of the Looney Tunes cartoon, "HOT CROSS BUNNY", that begins with a shot of the immense Paul Revere Foundation Hospital, and zooms in to its motto: "HARDLY A MAN IS NOW ALIVE".
