PSA Game Worn Cards (Double Take / Spit Take / What?) and Poll
Sorry, I thought this deserved a front page mention. Shiny cards or no.
Going through my junk mail from yesterday and stumbled across this from PSA. Not even sure why I clicked it on, but when I did I nearly fell out of my pants. https://www.psacard.com/gameworn?j=3...OI8AAAAA%3D%3D I'm sure some of you saw this already...or in your general apathy over e-mails from PSA...just glossed over it. I'm on the fence about whether this is the worst idea ever...or the best idea ever. I'm sure if these "Giveaways" ever hit the market, they will bring spirited bidding. Long story short. Game worn cards of Bobby Witt Jr. and Corbin Carroll....as in, they had these cards in their pocket or on their person somewhere, when they were playing an actual baseball game. They then signed the cards indicating so, and passed them on to PSA for grading and promotional purposes. On the surface...I hate it...deep down, I probably would have killed to have one of these cards of Don Mattingly, back in 1986 or so. What say you? Best Idea Ever! Worst Idea Ever! OK Idea! Meh...don't care. |
I think it's absolutely asinine but I'm sure people will pay absurd amounts of money for it, so what do I know?
|
One of the first thoughts that come to mind for me. If they had thought of this scheme back in 1985, Pete Rose might have strode up to the plate against Eric Show, with vending boxes full of cards strategically taped to various parts of his body.
:D |
I think it is extremely stupid but if Wade Boggs had done it I would still pay way more than most for one.
|
Another forced scarcity scheme, but at least this one is sort of fun.
|
Seems odd. How are they actually carrying these around?
They certainly would not be even in a PSA 2 shape if they played a full actual game with these in their pocket. Also, running around with some protected hard case in your pocket is an injury risk while sliding or diving. Show me one quite literally folded in half and dirt stained and I might have more trust. I smell a rat. The majority of "game worn" cards contain patches of jersey's used during warm up or in the locker room prior. "Event worn" is even worse, as the player will quite literally have boxes of hundreds of jerseys at events like the NFL Rookie Premier and spend an hour just putting them on and tearing them off. They are worn for literally a second. I think these at best are just from warmup and more likely stuck in a pocket in the locker room for a minute. |

The PSA release basically makes a point of saying how rough the condition of the cards are, because of "Game Use". The Corbin Carroll listing actually says they were tucked in his back pocket with a stick of gum, during the game. Whether this is accurate or not...I am not prepared to say, even though I have not signed an NDA. :D:D |
PSA sure has a lot of faith that these ball players actually carried these cards on the field with them .

I'll make two assumptions...and at least one could possibly be wrong. #1. They had a spotter at both events #2. They paid a lot of money for each one of these guys to do so |
What next
Actual dirt on card from his steal of 2nd base August 12 2024. Or …. dent in card from being hit by pitch…. or Champagne soaked card from NL Championship locker room celebration…. the possibilities are endless…..

Better than a card company throwing Babe Ruth’s bat into a wood chipper... I guess |
I selected: Meh...Don't Care...
As a somewhat cynical adult it just seems like yet another corporate gimmick to entice additional submissions; but if I were 10 years old again I'd probably love it. |

I think if you’re into purchasing cards from player collections you’ll be into these too. I’ve seen cards with The Casey Stengel collection on the flip. And others.

Same. Born there...wife was raised there...still go to the Costco there. :D |
These are closer to player worn than most patch cards. So there's that at least.

When is too much really too much. The thrill is gone.

The Fonz is laughing for sure!

Here's another one, in a similar vein. Also like the Rookie patches that Panini is getting players to wear in their first game and then embedding them in cards. https://www.otia.com/site/assets/fil...obs.1000x0.jpg |
Meh...don't care.
I don't even care enough to write anything witty here. |
If the cards are kept in their back uniform pockets during the game, then PSA will need to institute a new and pertinent qualifier:
BS - Butt Sweat |
i'd like to see cards containing actual dna...that way down the road many will be destroyed...enhancing their rarity...in order to clone another don mattingly. hair samples...maybe even a tooth...that'd be cool!!!!
|
The average card grade on these is 2.64...might these prove to ultra-modern collectors that cards that aren't pristine still have value?
If not, it's kind of a campy, fun idea...some of the captions on Witt's cards are pretty...well, witty. We've seen worse promotions! |
They're also being given away for free. I don't think anyone has a lot of skin in the game with these cards. Not sure why people aren't more fun about them.
