Addie Joss T206 - Known Variation?
Apologies in advance, if this is common knowledge to the seasoned T206 collector...
I recently noticed that there appear to be two distinctly different versions of the Addie Joss T206 Portrait. I have never heard this discussed, so wanted to inquire as to whether there are 2 known variations. First is the variant I just noticed, which features identical common anomalies... 1. White Dot in upper-right corner 2. Black "mole" in front of his left ear 3. A "break" in the black outline, just above his left shoulder 4. White "smear" on up-turned portion of his collar These 4 anomalies are identical in the examples currently in HA and REA, linked below... https://sports.ha.com/itm/baseball-c...MyBids-101116# https://bid.robertedwardauctions.com...?itemid=178977 And below is a link showing the seemingly more prevalent variation, which exhibits none of those 4 traits... https://www.ebay.com/itm/38533945519...Bk9SR-yi8NTsYw I'm in the market for a Joss, and just want to be clear on whether there is a known variant. I know the '52 Topps Mantle comes in two types, and neither seems to command a premium over the other. Does that hold true for the Addie Joss as well? |

On the E and L in Cleveland the printing is broken up also on the variant ones. The only portrait I have is the more common one and the printing is not broken up.

both your examples are Piedmont 150/25's First step is to see if you can find a Piedmont 150/25 that DOESN'T have those attributes. Otherwise it's just minor print variations from being on a different plate at a different factory.

If only Ted Z was still with us... Sad

Not mine but stolen pic from ebay, piedmont 150/25 without the variations.

cool, that makes it at least a little more interesting. Still going to be a tough sale as a legit variation as it is likely just printing issues, but still a fun thing to look into.
