This arrived today. :)
I've been working on '56 Topps for a while. A couple years ago, I decided to finish the set by focusing on the biggest stars first. I already had Mickey Mantle and Jackie Robinson. My next seven pickups were Mays, Aaron, Clemente, Koufax, Williams, Yogi, and Kaline. Now that I've got Banks, I have (arguably) the ten biggest stars of the set. This was the goal I set for myself in '22 and I'm happy to have gotten here. I'll enjoy this for a little while and then get back to chipping away at the set. |
I haven't been active in vintage in a while. But glad to be posting in this section again.
I have decided that I have way too many cards. Why do I have 40k cards of 2019-2024 products sitting in boxes in a closet? I mean, inserts, parallels/refractors, base, RCs, etc. Why do I have 20k Rangers cards sitting in boxes? I have no clue. And I have a wife nagging me to downsize. So I've made the decision to do just that. I've decided to sell off all of my non-PC stuff and use the money to focus on slabbed vintage HOFers. Doesn't have to be high grade. Mid-grade (4s-6s) are just fine with me. To take it a step further, I've gone through all of my Rangers and picked out the players I like the most over time and pulled those players. I've decided to ditch the rest. Not sure what I'll do with 5 3200 boxes of Rangers from '72-'24, but I'll figure something out. To get start, I have sold a pair of lots of 1980s-90s junk wax Rangers to a buddy of mine. Players like Palmiero, O'Brien, some of the no name guys. He then turned around and has sold me a very special card. Hopefully, it'll be here tomorrow, and I can show that off ... stay tuned. So far, I've only sold a little bit of stuff. But I got enough to buy a couple of graded vintage cards. I'm extremely happy with my pick ups. I know Mantle isn't slabbed. But I plan on slabbing it with SGC at the Allen show next weekend. I will also take the 1958 Topps Snider, crack it and reslab that one too. For now, here's what I picked up. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...602fea2a_c.jpg |
2nd high end mail day in a row. I could get used to these types of mail days, lol. But I realize I won't get them every day or even every week. Heck, I may not get mail days like this but a couple of times a year. Got this one for next to nothing. Long story, short version.
I've done a couple of deals with a guy about 2 hours away that lived probably 30 minutes from where I moved from. Anyway, I sold him probably 1,200 Rangers cards over the past 3 weeks. Older guys like Palmiero, Jeff Frye, Pete O'Brien, the nickel/dime type stuff. Probably 200 different Palmiero cards. Anyway, he reaches out and says he has a card he wants to move and would make me a deal on it since I had given him a good deal and been easy to work with on 3 previous transactions (2 in the last 3 weeks and one in December that had 160 IP/TTM Rangers autos). He shows me this card. I ask what he wants, and he lets me know. The amount he was asking was only $25 more than the cards I had sold him in the past 3 weeks. So, I basically paid $25 for this card. Well, it came in the mail today. I plan on subbing it to SGC at the Allen show next week to get it slabbed. Not sure what I'll do with it then. But a dang Joe D auto. How cool is that? I wasn't sure where to post it since it's technically a 1992 card of a guy that played in the 30s-40s. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...3ae04150_z.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...79fd7f44_z.jpg |

Down to just 2 to finish my set. Anyone have a Bruton fielding or Covington 7 bats they're willing to part with?

Stopped at a local show and grabbed a little nostalgia and a nice Berra. Very little vintage, but had a nice conversation with a few dealers.

There was a show in my area today too. Among the stack of cards that I picked up were a few 1962 & 1966 high numbers and a nice little batch of 1969 O-pee-chees:

Picked this up at the Garfield, NJ show from Brian Fish. Since my budget doesn't afford me the opportunity to go after the 1968 Venny Nolan Ryan, I thought that Tom Terrific's 68 would be a fantastic alternative!

Unexpected find in a pile of Japanese menko. In case you don't know, these are almost impossible to track down, and each player only had 2 cards made from their Japan playing days....

I'm new into collecting vintage graded HOFers. So my collection doesn't compare to most. But I did buy a few at the Allen Show this weekend. Got the Aaron for a pretty good deal, so I will move it as I'm trying to focus on SGC slabs (I just like the look of them even though they don't sell close to PSA and are considered lower than PSA). But here are my pickups...

Not technically a recent pickup, but this was a recent return from SGC of some cards I've had in my collection for quite a few years. Some are part of sets, others singles.

Sammy, congrats on the Stahl-Meyer Willie! That is an absolute beast of a card!!!
Not my only May pickup, but one of the ones I have in hand so far. I’m getting closer on this set, to the point where I basically need Willie Mays and then a crapload of commons. I’m not worrying about the back variations gray / white, at least yet. What price would you all suggest I target for ‘56 commons at the National in July, like if I’m looking in bins? I would imagine I’m going to be in the VG-EX range on raw. I don’t like big ugly obvious creases, but can live with a lot of other things. Curious as to thoughts. Or like if in a lot - 50 cards, 75 cards, 100 cards? How much should I be paying per card? Thanks. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...ba9ede535b.jpg Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
Nice Bowmans!
This was a recent arrival at LCS #2, and at lunch today was able to come to a deal with the owner and take it home with me. My inner 11-year old is giddy right now; this is a bucket-lister for sure. The vintage card that started it all for me back along about 1987 was Sandy’s last card, a 1966 Topps. So fitting in a way, all these years later - to finally add this one. The grade won’t make any headlines for sure but I feel like this retains a lot of eye appeal for a low-grade card. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...df58544a88.jpg Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Happiness is a very nice 1964 Topps Stand Up and a short print to boot.
Don Lock - Washington Senators. |
picked up a dozen 1960 Topps to help complete my 'well loved'/'scratch and dent' set - though they were in better condition the price was good and the dealer was nice
also 1963 Topps partial Pittsburgh Pirates team lot from an ebay purchase that took 18 days to arrive - no fault of the seller - was put in the mail the day after i paid - the package spent 7 days in NJ and 11 days in MO before being delivered also in a few tcdb trades (earlier then May, but recently...) - a couple of 1955 Bowman Kansas City A's, a 1960 Leaf Bob Grim and a 1968 Topps - Game Gene Alley |

I had posted this in another thread, but here’s my cool May pickup:
https://i.ibb.co/z5mwjS6/dimaggio.jpg It’s Joe DiMaggios final card as a player. He joined the 1951 US All Star Tour of Japan, and then retired a few weeks later. |

Just getting back into the hobby after many years and I’m starting off by swimming in the 1966-1975 pool. This is one of my favorite pickups of the month. I just loved to watch this guy hit back in the day.
