April 2024 Pickups
Happy to pick this up! With Fein's 'Babe Bows Out' photo now $40-50K (an early type 2 even sold in Heritage for $18.6K a few months ago) think the Harris version 'Farewell to #3' is way undervalued.

I picked this pinback up the last week of March.
Edit: What do you think of Huggins and Scott auctions? I've never used them before. |

So, back in the 60's, when Gaylord Perry was putting up 10 years of a sub 3.00 ERA, he needed a side gig in the off season. These days, he'd be making about $25M per year.
|
Jeff, great Ruth photo! I didn't know there was another photographer near Fein who took a similar shot. Is there more to the story? Very cool. Your photo collection is stellar.

There's another copy in the current SCP, has a cool caption on the back but really no additional information unfortunately. |

1946 Feller All-Stars Program. Based on the images available for the item, it seems that Paige was playing with a different team than he played for most of the series. Based on my research the closest I have found is the game on Oct 16, 1946 at Wrigley Field in LA, which would mean it was one of the later games in the series, but I will need the program in hand to confirm (as I do not have the opposing lineup and it is not a perfect match).
The second item is not a sports item, but is something I find super cool. It is an original drawing by Garth Williams, who illustrated Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little and the Little House of the Prairie books among many others. I have a few Little House on the Prairie original illustrations and when this hit eBay, I decided that as long as the price remained reasonable, I would love to have it. |

Super excited to share my most recent pick up. Was one of my white whales. This is the first item I posted about raising funds for on my BST posts.
This ticket is from Dec 23, 1979 of the NY Rangers vs Boston Bruins at MSG. The significance of the game is that it's the game where almost the entire Bruins teams went into the stands to fight the fans. I have been searching for a copy for a loooooong time. While I am not a big ticket collector, I am a longtime Ranger fan who happened to watch the game on TV as it happened. It's one of my most fun and crazy memories watching games back then. Below is a video of the incident. For those interested, an entire copy of the game is one YouTube as well. https://youtu.be/6tkx8Tbovdw?si=dFKVDN1B2PNXwAAFhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e3deeb2e4c.jpg Sent from my SM-F946U using Tapatalk |

Not acquired in April, but finally got around to properly scanning a recent pickup - this panoramic of the 1930 Old Timer's Day. Some legends in this image. From the Roger Bresnahan estate.

Beautiful, I love the collection of different uniforms in that photo
|
Thanks, yes I agree! Some wore their college coaches jerseys.

I picked up this 1961 placemat to go with my 1964. I don't know what possesses people to save paper for 63 years, but I'm glad someone did.
|
Very cool Rob! I spent a major part of my childhood in that ballpark

May I ask the dimensions? Doug |

Happy to win this incredible lot of 19 original Frank Smith slides plus one cracked glass slide of Speaker/Covaleski. Looking forward to seeing the 8x10 prints. The Naps team photo has Joe Jackson and now I am on the hunt to find the original paper with the article that is included. If anyone won the other lots and wants to sell some slides please let me know :)

Beautiful tintype Rob, and I am not usually a fan of tintypes.

Quite the pose, Rob.

Giants plaque, likely from the 1970s? Seems like just a regular item, but I've heard from fellow Giants collectors who have never seen it. A quick Worthpoint search revealed a Pirates version, but none for other teams. The seller told me he also has White Sox. It's 11 x 16. Undecided about removing the wrapping. On the one hand, the original packaging makes it very original. On the other, it might display better without it.

Recent pickup, one of my favorite images. Perfect compliment to the Farewell to No. 3 photo at the top of this thread too.

Hof book many signatures
5 Attachment(s)
Not just picked up in April, but I thought worth showing. Has numerous additional signatures
There are autographs inside of Red Barber, Jack Buck as broadcasters, and, signed on their plaques: Hubbell, Dickey, Terry, Lyons, Cronin, Greenberg, Feller, Roush, Appling, Grimes, Lloyd Waner, Medwick, Coveleski, Hoyt, Musial, Boudreau, Haines, Hooper, Marquard, Berra, Lefty Gomez, Wynn, Buck Leonard, Irvin, Spahn, George Kelly,…and, of course, Mrs. Babe Ruth and Mrs. Lou Gehrig. There's also a Campanella but not sure about it...a relative possibly or auto pen (?) |
Quote:
In 20 years most of the living HOF members able to sign in a similar context will be from the scribble generations and you won't be able to read any of them. |
So true. The autographs I’ve gotten in the past few years are totally unrecognizable; if they were not signed on a baseball or football card or picture, one would have no idea who the player was. The problem is that the card or sporting equipment companies send a player a few hundred cards to sign for a fee and the players rush through signing them as fast as they can. The art of autograph collecting has changed so much. I started to build my collection years and years ago before players charged to sign.

If that was the problem then there would be examples which were readable from situations where they are not in a hurry, and generally speaking there are not. The problem is a lack of respect for the collector / fan. I am aware of a rock star who many have heard of who signs legal documents in an unrecognizable scribble, but who signs autographs carefully and neatly in a way that is completely 100% always readable. Of course he seldom signs autographs, but when he does, it is a piece of art similar to the vast majority of autographs signed pre-1980 and all autographs pre-1950. |
Can't argue with your point about lack of respect. Solid evaluation. Reminds me of a time years ago at Shea Stadium after a Dodgers-Mets game whenas a young teen, I approached Junior Gilliam in the parking lot asking for an autograph and his response was "Get the F**k out of here." Now...that's lack of respect.

^^^ many states don’t even teach cursive writing anymore.
(mine may suck, but at least I know how to do it!) |
I hope this is the right section for items like this now. Fun flea market pickup today.

Very cool. Always fun to see where else photographs of Mathewson were used. That's the famous N.W. Penfield image used to describe his feet position and "Watching a Runner at First".

The original glass in Oak Premiere machine has it's decal but it's a little worn. I've also recreated the decal on a new piece of glass. I might apply this NOS decal, but now that I have it, I'm a little nervous that I'll screw up applying the decal. |
Just stumbled on this one from eBay. Fragile condition but not often does a program from April 17th, 1947 come up for sale. Jackie Robinson’s first MLB hit (a bunt single to third) and Duke Snider’s MLB debut. Jackie’s debut on Opening Day drew about 26k, but the follow-up only had about 10k in attendance. Today is the 77th anniversary!
