How feasible is getting a full set (besides the big four) of t206 in only off backs? I know it’s possible but I would assume it takes lots of time effort and money, much more then a just Piedmont/SC set. Has anyone on here done this before or is currently attempting and if so share your challenges with it.

It can be done and I believe it has been. Unfortunately, one of the cards has a known population of 1 or 2 (might be 1 actually) and I don’t think that card will surface anytime soon. I do know if at least 2 guys with 519 in all off backs as well and there are likely more. Good luck!

That one card is Monte Cross, and the last Cross/ Tolstoi sold for $10K+. Otherwise it is doable.

Ben I just recently finished a 519/520 all off back set. You can see it at the Flickr link in my bio. Paying $10K for a Cross is not in the cards for me so I'll continue to upgrade and add different combos I don't have but don't see myself ever getting to 520 w/o some luck. The cards are out there. There are some that are extremely tough given pops but if you have patience they eventually turn up.

Happy to shed any light I can either here or via PM.

Best,

Scott

Hi Ben. Building an off back set of t206 is a super fun project and very doable (except, as mentioned above, the Monte Cross card). I put together a 520 set over the course of 4 years, and it was far and away the most fun I’ve had building a set of baseball cards. I think the harder advertising brands make the set so much more appealing…and they’re fun to hunt down. Even though my set is complete, I still try to upgrade cards to harder backs whenever I get the chance.
If you decide to take on the challenge, feel free to reach out…I’m happy to offer experience on which ones are tougher, etc.

Here is a link to my set

Sonny is a wonderful resource and prepare for your jaw to hit the floor when you click on his Flickr link. The finest off back collection out there.

Wow! I just checked both of your albums and that is pretty sick, that just confirmed my need to try and do this, although probably wouldn't look as good.

Agreed with the above posters...(they are great guys too). Its quite doable (except for cross), and I am in the process, but not particularly motivated. Sov 350s are usually barely more than piedmont/sc for commons so that can help quite a bit. I have a complete set plus magie, and right at 50% offbacks...of which I include polar bear. Scott is too highbrow to accept polar bear....except for the two StL dudes which only have polar bear backs.

Always amazed to look at Sonny's set. I've got almost 60 different front/back combos for my Providence set, and for 7 of the 8 players, his example is a tougher back my toughest. I have the same or better back for only one player. Amazing.

Sonny is one of the great guys in the Hobby...and his rare back set is second to none.
