Those Roberto Clemente Signed Checks
 

Just bought this check as part of a collection and jogged my memory to when these first came out. Signed Clemente checks have become extremely desirable and quite pricey over the years. I was lucky enough to be around the hobby in the early 1980's and remember being offered 30 of these Clemente checks for $350.00 each. I had never seen one and not knowing how many were out there I declined and instead bought only one. In hindsight $350.00 WAS quite rich then as Babe Ruth checks could be bought for $500.00 or less and Ty Cobb checks were less than $100.00. As it would turn out more Clemente checks surfaced but most were not as nice as the original group. I was lucky enough however to buy a handful of the checks signed by "The Babe" as $500.00 seemed liked a bargain. Ended up with 30 or more and a year later they were fetching $1,000.00 each so I sold them all. Like Yogi Berra said "It's hard to make predictions, especially about the future"

I remember Cobb checks for $50, but all anyone knew was that there were a LOT of them coming out! I think I can speak for just about everyone in the hobby when I say that I'd like to have back everything I ever sold and everything I ever turned down because of price. Of course, I wouldn't have had that cash to help get me through life, and might even have had to go get a real job, so how much can I really complain?
