Don Gullett has died at 73.
 

He was a WIN machine!

No doubt Cincinnati's best Pitcher during the Big Red Machine era. He was simply terrific, especially in clutch situations.

RIP Mr. Gullett.

One of the my favorite Reds.

I remember hearing about how he scored 72 points in a high school football game. He scored 11 TDs and kicked 6 extra points, wild.

He was very good but very injury-prone. Played his last MLB game at age 27, which is most players' peak.

Wow don't really know too much about him but pretty impressive he pitched a full season at just 19.

Now that I am closing in on 60, 73 doesn't seem that old anymore. RIP.

Only with the Yankees briefly near the end, but my dad and the uncles in my family still talk about him as the great "coulda been".

Imagine him and Guidry teamed up for several more years on that staff? That run for them might not have ended after 1978.

Such fond memories of him and the Big Red Machine. RIP

So many players from my childhood are passing away now. Sad. Guess I'm getting old. Geez...

It's daily anymore. That's what I loved about Vin Scully. He was calling Dodgers games before I was born. I didn't feel quite so old.

RIP, sir. You were a big part of a great Reds team.

I still remember when my Dad let me stay up late in 1970 to watch Gullett as a rookie. He was my second favorite player to Bench, the guy was a gamer and alot better than many gave him credit for.

Don Gullet threw HARD.

As a Cardinals fan, i hated when he pitched against them. He was a fierce competitor on the mound, like a pitching version of Pete Rose.

After high school, I'd drive to St Louis or Cincinnati to see a game, about a 4 hour drive, with Cincy being a bit closer. I saw him pitch several times, and listened to a ton of games on the radio. Gullett was from Greenup County in our home state of Kentucky, so I would cheer him on except when against the Cards.

As good as he was, I felt like he should have pitched for the Dodgers. At that time, I felt like the Dodgers cared about their pitchers, but the Reds would just send pitchers out to the mound until their arms melted off. Had he been in LA, he'd have pitched a few more seasons, I thought. And I still think that.

Gullet broke bats. Gullet threw blazing strikes. Gullet was tough. Gullet was a ball player.

One of my first favorite players. I remember being shocked how he had such a good winning percentage year after year. I didn't quite understand how most or many of the other Reds had "All Star" in their card but Gullett didn't.

My friend and I who collected as kids always called him, "The Worried Look".

Has anyone here ever met him? I always meant to find him online or mail him a note and now it's too late. RIP Don Gullet.
