Modern stuff on eBay
For the last 3-5 years I’ve participated in a variety of box breaks just for shits and giggles. Can be fun though rarely lucrative.
Most of the time I sell off a good chunk of the modern football and baseball cards on eBay for a little ROI. Very little ROI typically. What has been really striking in the last 6-9 months to me is that the modern crap, I mean cards, that I’ve in the past have unloaded quickly for $10 or $20 now sit on eBay for weeks or months with zero views or maybe 1-3 views. Just generally negligible interest. Maybe people will do better at the national in person. Seems like the entire market for the modern stuff — with very rare exception — has just vanished. |
Like many other commodities that got hyped up during COVID, I suspect this is partly a result of newcomers to the hobby getting turned off from sportscards. As people lose interest, the market for mid/low-end modern craters, while the really rare, sought-after cards continue to go up in value due to the tier of extremely wealthy collectors who remain.
