1989 Fleer Bill Ripken Black Box w/ Jagged Side

I noticed this card listed in Donovan Ryan's guide and found it pretty interesting. There is a black and white pic but I am eager to see a clear photo if anyone has a copy.

Personally, this is 'new' to me but was wondering, with the newer crop of collectors for this card, just how difficult it is to find.

Do you have a picture or a link? I have owned a couple 89 Fleer Ripkens and am not sure of the card you are referring to. The one I know about that is described like that is fairly common.

I know the card you are referring to. Saw-cut / Slit through the bat knob only showing the right side of the Black Box? Donovan and I often referred to it as a Black Box with Jagged Side until we were able to acquire the Left side example. It was later determined to be a Circle Scribble (CS4) version. Blackest scribble version that hadn't been seen at that time. Here are pics of two Circle Scribble (CS4) versions with one showing the right side and one showing the left side.

And putting the left and right sides together - you get a full Circle Scribble CS4 version. :)

Thank you Jon for clearing it up. Yep those are fairly rare.

Wow, this is fascinating!

Thanks for answering my question. So it isnt a "3rd" version of the black box but a denser/thicker circle scribble?

I guess this got me curious about black box cards and potential varieties within them. Sometimes when poring over them, I swear I can see subtly different shapes but it could very well be my imagination.

Black Box - really 2 versions but 4 varieties:

1) Square edge Black Box

2) Rounded edge Black Box (Straight upper left white line / stripe)

3) Rounded edge Black Box (Jagged upper left white line / stripe)

4) Rounded edge - Glossy / Tin "Blue Back" Edition
