T216 Ty Cobb - value or value trap

Silly question but I’m a bit baffled why this card went so low during the pandemic era. PSA Pop for both poses is like 16 only. Should this card have gone for much more? Credit to the guy who snagged it but am I missing something? Is the card too obscure?

I think a combo of it being too obscure, plus the image of Cobb itself, isn't the greatest in the world.

It sold for $13,800 in the Spring 2020 REA auction, so the seller made a profit. If they had waited a year though…

Yeah, I think even 5 months later on the November 2020 sale, it would have sold for much more.

T216s

Only elite card collectors go after T216s...that sounded Bruce-esque...Jerry

T216s?

Demand is king over rarity.
As a collector who focuses on rare stuff, it's not the most financially rewarding, but it's a lot of fun.

*Bruces-esque (Brucii-esque?).

With all the talk of pronouns these days, Bruces would have been quite the trend-setters.

Agree 100%. There aren’t that many people out there who want to spend big bucks on a high grade t216 (issued from 1911-16), when you can easily get the same pose with a different back and a lower grade. The T216 posted has two rarities: (1) the back, and (2) the high grade. Two+ people bid on it at the end, it could go through the roof. Only one real bidder and it flops; not that $16k is a flop per se (it’s a ton of money for a card).

All that said, the comp posted is from November 2020. I suspect this card sells for well above (maybe $30k++) in today’s world

Ryan you make a great point, two bidders making a market can create wacky results. Cards like these aren’t for returns, but definitely fun for white whale chasing. Especially if it’s so obscure, the prices are still reasonable.

Better than one bidder and an artificially reached reserve...
