Vintage & Classic Baseball Collector Magazine Find @ Antique Store

Hey folks,

A good friend sent pics from an antique store find.

The first issue of the Vintage & Classic Baseball Collector magazine. An article by Lew Lipset is highlighted on the front. The table of contents looks great overall. Seemed to be a great resource.

I thought you folks might enjoy this.

What periodicals do you have in your collection?

I collect periodicals as well as many other members. VCBC was one of the very first series I acquired. Issue number 7 was extraordinary. Happy hunting
.

Such great information in those, I have a couple with articles on T217 Monos and Texas Tommys. Love the Mark Macrae advertisement.

Exhibitman 12-22-2023 01:03 PM

I had the run. Sold it last summer. I've still got some copies of the ones where I wrote articles.

Great, great magazine

Love reading the old VCBC articles - particularly on new sets which I knew nothing about. I also have issues of Old Carboard, of course.

It smacks the whole concept of third-party grading, which was then more or less in its infancy. As luck would have it, #7 was the first copy of VCBC I ever saw, having stumbled upon it in an airport news/giftshop while trying to find something to read on the plane. Thereafter bought a couple of entire runs.

I also have complete runs of VCBC and Old Cardboard magazines. Both are chock full of great info. Per the OC web site, one can purchase the entire set and individual issues of OC Magazine: https://www.oldcardboard.com/subscriptions.asp

I have a number of VCBC magazines saved. That article on m101-1 and national copper plates is so fascinating in that I would have thought Lew Lipset would have seen the complete National copper Plate set by then. They really must be even rarer than i thought. Does anyone else have a National copper Plate Anson or Hoy?i have seen the larger “framed” Anson in a later Lipset auction i believe.

Issue #7 is the hardest to find. There are stories out there as to the reason why the issue is scarce.

Secret Santa sent a couple of 1977 Sports Collectors News issues last Xmas, including its editor's own interesting list of interesting collectors. And check out those blazers!

shameless post - complete run for sale.

Inquire here :-)

I'll try and post tomorrow in BST.....

Yeah rumor was PSA bought as many as it could find lol. The interview with Daniel Desmond is priceless. Nothing has changed except that doctoring is even more rampant now.

Terrific publication (IMO)....

I have a complete run of VCBC. About 20 years ago, I successfully defended the
magazine in a libel suit brought in federal court in New Jersey.

Can we know who brought that libel suit against VCBC? Curious minds want to know.

Brian

I see the term "Gem Mint" was used in that 1977 issue of SCN. Makes me wonder when the earliest recorded use of the term dates from.

BillyCoxDodgers3B 12-26-2023 06:17 AM

I have owned hundreds of thousands of autographs and examined/authenticated far more than that over a long time. I've heard the names Max Schrager and Jack Thompson, but barely at all. What's really strange is that I do not recall handling a single item inscribed to either collector. This makes no sense due to the sheer volume that has passed through my hands over nearly 40 years.

Brian

They were sued by Richard Galasso, a self-proclaimed autograph expert who was
criticized in more than one issue.

Exhibitman 12-27-2023 08:56 AM

Nice work, Tom. All us VCBC authors thank you for your service.
