The future of the PSA set registry
I'm brand new to this site but thought I'd highlight a new interview with Nat Turner, the CEO of Collectors, on today's episode of the Golden Age of Cardboard podcast. A lot of vintage collectors use PSA's set registry and he was quite aware of the fact that the technology can no longer support the registry (he indicated 10,000 people per day use the registry). It's being rebuilt from the ground up and he highlighted plans they have for the future of the registry. They start discussing the registry at the 38:50 mark of the podcast. You can listen on Apple or Spotify (and presumably other podcast platforms).
Looking forward to engaging more on this site. I'm currently working on collecting cards of all of the players profiled in The Glory of Their Times and also minor league cards of players that played for teams in Portsmouth and Norfolk, VA. |
Welcome. Is the "LA" Louisiana or Los Angeles...or something else?

Los Angeles. Just realized there's an about me page so I filled that out.

I put in a new set request in Dec 2021 that's still not complete. To their credit it's still on the pending list! Sounds like I might have to wait a while, maybe forever-ish. No biggie.
I love the registry so I'll definitely check out the interview. |

I guess this explains why it takes forever to load anything on the app. I always figured my connection was just slow. Turns out their servers can't handle all of the traffic.
I guess that's a nice problem to have. |
On 11/7/23 I was told that, due to their backlog, they "are unable to accept new set requests at this time".

Back to the main topic - PSA registry. I'm not a "registry" collector so I have no ties to it other than looking at some of the OJ collections to see what the collectors actually have because the registry doesn't distinguish the pose number. From what I read there are a lot of serious registry collectors so it would seem PSA would put a bit of thought and effort into enhancing this PSA feature. It will be interesting to see what happens if they ignore this part of their business. |
As long as it doesn't still take 45 seconds to load the population pages every time...

Yes, new set registries have been closed for a while now. In the interview he mentioned that there is one lady that handles all of the registry creation and she has to input everything manually. So big opportunity there and he commented on some of what they are considering as improvements.

One other notable item that I probably should have posted in the original message. They are now scanning all cards and going to start 3-D printing the slab insert. This should improve the slab aesthetics as it sounds like this will allow them to get rid of the mylar inserts which are included to protect the cards and prevent them from moving around in the slab. Should be good for vintage slabs since there are a lot of cards that aren't a standard size.

Or an added potential for damaging the card if the new insert is accidentally too small to actually fit the card. |
