SGC qualifier "rebacked"
I recently saw an OJ card graded Authentic Altered with the notation "rebacked." Pardon my ignorance, but from the photo, I can't really tell what that means.
Any help understanding would be appreciated. Mike Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk |
Rebacked means that the original cardboard was replaced at some point. It could have been skinned (half the cardboard was torn away and replaced) or the entire backing of the photograph could have been replaced.

Really hard to tell from the photo how much alteration was done in the repacking -- and if it really matters. I will say that the corners look ridiculously sharp for an OJ

Some reback jobs are pretty good, others use the wrong type of cardboard. As far as collectors go, everyone has their opinions about card alterations. From my experience, rebacked OJs sell for far less than a copy that has the original back. Others may shy away from rebacked OJs but I'd consider adding it to a collection if the discount is good and the image is strong (overall strong eye appeal).
