Baltimore News Ruth Ends Tonight - Let's See Your 2 Earliest Ruth Items
2 Attachment(s)
With all of the buzz around where the 1914 Baltimore News Ruth will end tonight I thought it would be fun for everyone to share their two earliest Babe Ruth items. You can be cards, photos, advertising, memorabilia... anything Bambino.
For me I think it is this 1915 Red Sox Fatima poster (signed by Smoky Joe Wood, so I think it is likely from his collection) that measures 18.5" x 12.5" and Babe's 1920 Pathe Freres premium (7" x 9.25"). The Pathe Freres now resides in a PSA 3.5 holder - its just too big for my scanner. |
I only have one Ruth so I guess I’m out 😐
|
These were both mine around the 2010 time frame:

I also bought an original photo of Ruth and his wife from this site a few years ago, but I just put it in the safe. I'll see if I can locate the thread. |

My earliest Ruths are a 1921 American Caramel and a Paul Thompson photo, also 1921. In the E121 he is wearing a Red Sox uniform; that's as close as I've gotten to a BoSox-era Bambino. Another favorite is this photo taken during the making of "Fancy Curves" in 1926.
Fun thread. Eyes riveted on REA. https://photos.imageevent.com/kawika...121%20Ruth.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/kawika...uth%20foto.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/kawika...%20Curves_.jpg |

Nice Doug - not sure I have seen the 1916 one before.
Have you ever thought about putting together a catalog of all of these? |

I am working on a catalog, the first version of "my" catalog was a combination of the lists from John Esch, Alan Kleinberger and myself. We're on version #14 currently. The biggest thing slowing us down is missing the ads from the following issues of Baseball Magazine (in case anybody on this thread has those issues) : 1909 Sept 1910 Jan 1911 May 1914 June 1918 Oct 1919 Jan, Feb, Mar, June, Sept, Nov, Dec 1920 all but June & July 1921 all but Jan, Jun & Aug 1922 Mar, Apr, June, July, Aug,Dec 1923 May, June, July, Nov, Dec 1924 all but Oct & Dec 1925 Jan, Mar, July 1926 Jan, Oct, Nov, Dec 1927 Jan, Mar 1928 Jan, Mar, Aug 1933 June |

Thought the News Ruth would go a little closer to the Mantle but still a respectable amount. Like seeing all these cool Babe items. Here`s a couple, Ruler from St Mary`s Industrial School (love these odd ball pieces) and Secondly, snapshot from 1915 Sox in Hot Springs ARK headed to spring training. "Fairly" certain that`s the Big Fella sans hat with the bushy hair right in the middle.

I have exactly two Babe Ruth items, and they're only allowed in my collection because Grover Alexander is on there too.

Some early Babe items, I believe exclusively Red Sox poses notwithstanding the pinstripes on the D&M and the Yankees designation on the FF

Incredible cards folks! Here's a slightly different perspective as my ruth collection starts with the yankees. At Best a few are transitional.

Awesome stuff everyone.
This image by G.T. Murray may be the earliest actual existing photograph of Ruth in a Red Sox uniform. It was taken before March 12, 1915, at the beginning of their Spring Training in Little Rock, Arkansas. Even though it is a team photo, Ruth is dead center and his image always jumped out to me. It came from the collection of Joe Wood and is pictured on the title page of The Glory of Their Times. |

Kevin, that is an incredible piece. So cool.
Very fun thread! |
I`ll second those thoughts on that incredible glass negative, outstanding Sir. Another Babe related piece and one of my oddball items, 1913 St Mary`s Industrial School Calendar. Have a couple with this being the better presenting. Keep them coming.....
