Tuesday Trivia: Youngest and Oldest ROYs
Corbin Carrol (age 23), and Gunnar Henderson (age 22) are heavy favorites to be the NL and AL Rookies of Year. The average age for a Rookie of the Year is 23.
But who are the youngest and oldest players to win Rookie of the Year? |
I don’t know if he’s the oldest, but Sam Jethroe would have to be up there.
|
Doc Gooden?
|
Al Kaline?
|
Ichiro
|
Willie Mays for youngest?
Don't think Kaline won ROY. |

Sam Jethroe was indeed the oldest ROY ever, winning it at age 33 in 1950 when he integrated the Boston Braves. There have only been seven players 27 years or older to win the award. Other notable winners include Kazuhiro Sasaki (age 32) who won it for Seattle in 2000, Ichiro at age 27, and Jacke Robinson at age 28. |

Dwight Gooden won ROY at age 19 in 1984. Gooden is exactly one month younger than Bryce Harper, who also won ROY at age 19 in 2012. Gooden's birthday is November 16th, and Harper's is October 16th. Other notable young winners of the award include Willie Mays at age 20, Johnny Bench at 20, Frank Robinson at 20, Mike Trout at 20 (youngest ever in the AL), and Lou Whitaker at 21, Cal Ripken Jr. at 21, and Darryl Strawberry at age 21 the year before Gooden won. |
