N172 Clarkson on ebay - rebacked?

Just curious - was anyone on this board the high bidder for the following Clarkson N172 on ebay? Auction ended on October 15, 2023.

Looking closely at the pictures of the card in the auction description, the card appears to be rebacked. Does anyone else think the same. It almost looks like the new backing had pin holes in it. Also, the bottom corners look chopped. Not sure if I'd put up that money for an OJ that is rebacked unless it was a really tough card, and Clarkson, isn't that tough.

Thoughts?

Some appear to line up with damage at the top of the card, but I don't see any pinholes on the bottom front. I would have the same reservations you do. If it's Authenticity Guaranteed, then CGC should be able to see that and reject the sale.

I don't believe it is eligible for the authenticity guarantee because the seller is shipping from Canada

As the proud owner of 11 really nice OJ's, let me say that the front is an even bigger problem. From the photo, it doesn't look right at all. These are little albumen photos. Even when they begin to fade, as several of mine have, there is a certain "crispness" to the photo. I think this Clarkson looks like some kind of modern print. Plus, the card appears to be too thick. The card stock looks too white. Then there are the aforementioned back issues. I'm only just learning about such things, but I question the authenticity here from a distance.

Def looks off. Among all the problems mentioned…. How does the back of the card not show that bottom left corner clip? A magic trick?

My guess would be that the back photo is of different card all together.

As to weather that was an accident/oversight or for other reasons I cannot say.

I have seen that mistake everywhere from reputable auction houses to on this forum.
It's easy to mix up blank back photos when posting and not looking/rechecking closely.

Here's a horizontally flipped front, so now we're all looking at the 'same' card orientation, front and back, for the purpose of shape comparison...

I was bidding on this but got outbid, and I’m glad I did. I noticed the same thing about the back, especially the pinholes. I was thinking that the authenticity guarantee would protect me, but it never occurred to me that the seller being in Canada would be a factor in that.

I bid on this as well, but bailed once the price got too high. I wasn't confident about the back, and 99.1% feedback gave me pause too.

+1. I have purchased a few items knowing I was taking a chance, when I had a return/authenticity guarantee. Ebay will pay out for seller issues, when they need to, when the item isn't authentic.
