T206 Portraits
Hi group its been 13 years or so that I have been away from the hobby. In that time I was able to reflect , prioritize , grow, and focus on work and family. I realize just how much I love this hobby and just how much it really serves as a sort of therapy.
For me nothing beats coming home from a long day at work and going thru my pre war baseball cards. I enjoy so much just re doing my checklists or going thru my cards with a sports game on tv in the background. In the last few months ive started to focus on some sets I was working on before I took a much needed break. For the moment my main focus will be on the Monster ! Commons first than Southern Leaguers and than the HOF’s . Does anyone have a “Portraits only “ checklist they can post here or point me in the right direction ? Thanks for any help. Happy collecting to all ! |

Jorge,
PSA lists 182 portraits on the Registry. The T206Resource website checklist has 178. Regarding the T206Resource checklist: Add Al Bridwell with cap Add Jack Hayden Add Davy Jones Change Al Shaw to Hunky Shaw Add Sam Strang (I never understood this one since it doesn't look much like a portrait to me.) Hope that helps. Mike |

Thanks Mike!! I reached out to T206 Resource to make the changes and they agreed to do so it should be sometime soon.
I also reached out to PSA with same request and their rep said that Strang is not a portrait but asked for more clarification on my part so I sent a followup stating that it does show in the checklist so we will see what happens |

................. maybe it's just me (:o) ...... but I've never considered Gibson a portrait .....
Attachment 593375 Fun, fun, Scott  |

I agree, calling Gibson's card a portrait is like a shot below the belt. Brian |

I feel the same way about McGraw (Portrait w/ Hat). I own it, but it's not really a portrait...looks totally different than all others. Here's my complete HOF Portrait run. The Plank and Wags are not authentic :D

Strang is no longer a portrait on the PSA Registry checklist:

Great run, Bill. I agree, McGraw with cap is no way a portrait. And one below that is a portrait. (thanks again Tony!)

You do know that every time you show that awesome Young-Hindu I get flashbacks :). I have to settle for this one now. Kind of like my house. I have lived here 23 yrs and counting. If I had to buy it again, I literally couldn't afford 1/3 of it. https://luckeycards.com/cyb.jpg |
Leon- Flashbacks, or Heat-flashes? :)
I think I recently told you...I did a big deal with our beloved Ryan Hotchkiss (for one of his T206 Brown Old Mills), and the deal required me to part with 2 of my 3 HOF Portrait Hindus (Matty, Wajo, & Cy)...Was a tough decision, but rest assured Cy is still chillin' comfortably in my safe. ;) BTW, that's a great Cy example you have there! |

Maybe a combination of both. Heat flashes would be an upgrade sometimes.
Wise move keeping that Cy-Hindu. It's a sweet card. Lot's of cool looking portraits in T206 (pardon the other cards) Quote:

This is a fun thread! It's neat seeing some ole' friends that I once owned now being shared by others ;)
Here are a few of my favorite portraits from "The Monster"! https://www.collectorfocus.com/image...6/t206-ty-cobb https://www.collectorfocus.com/image...8/t206-ty-cobb https://www.collectorfocus.com/image...06-eddie-plank |

Leon, thanks again, happy to have Cy still.
Tony, awesome cards, especially the Plank! Chris, whatever the card is considered, it's stunning! |
The proof for some that this is a portrait is that it does not feature Titus's belt.

Tony - Amazing examples. Your stuff is always high end.
Michael - That Hindu Young is an absolute favorite of mine. Since I don't see a Hindu Young in my near future. I'll have to settle with these guys. |
I agree with MyBuddy and Kidnapped, Gibson and McGraw with cap are not portraits. My experience is that those guys know their old cards.
Seems like a knee jerk response was to figure if PSA says there are 182 portraits, then T206 Resource and anyone with a lesser number must have missed some. Still, collect what you want, and if you like the looks of Gibson and/or Mr. McGraw with a cap, add those guys in there. |

Since we're throwing around Cy Hindus, here is my PWCC pickup from last night.

Beauty. Brian, congrats!

I think that collectors who go after the T206 portraits probably are folks who like a consistent look (and appreciate the wonderful artwork). Not all of the portrait artwork is at the high level seen in the Big6's post showcasing Hall of Famers (some of the minor league players come to mind), but the T206 set is such a large issue we can cut it some slack.
Here is a favorite scan of mine of a group emphasizing red and orange backgrounds seen on some of the portrait cards. Brian |

I sold everything but my portraits. Still have about 70 or so. |
Dean, thanks. Those are some great Cy cards you have!
Brian, great pick up! |

It does not get better than an in-register T206 portrait; I basically don't collect any other T206's. Here are my favorite images:

Nice portraits. I'm collecting portraits with interesting and rich colors. I won the following in auctions earlier this year (Cassidy may have been BIN). They're more crisp in person. Ed Walsh, Ray Ryan, and Shag are definitely on my list, among others.
|
Incredible. One of the more attractive cards in this set, well done!
|
Srik- cool project! I like that you're gravitating towards the more unique, pastel colors.
|
Thanks guys! yup, I love those pastels for sure
