98 Years Ago Today Christy Mathewson Passed Away
1 Attachment(s)
Christy Mathewson Passed away on October 7th 1925 In Saranac Lake, New York. He had fought Tuberculosis and other lung issues for over 7 years. As a member of a chemical weapons unit with Ty Cobb in 1918 he was exposed to Mustard Gas. This in addition to contracting Influenza on the the ship to Europe caused his devastating lung condition. As my home is just outside of Matty's hometown of Factoryville, Pa. I've made collecting Matty items a large part of my collection. Show your Matty stuff!

Ca.1908 snapshot.
Type 2 (probably created in the 20s or 30s) which is fine with me 😃. Nice post! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...117fac40d7.jpg |

One of my all-time favorite pitchers. My first T206 and an appropriately trimmed and just as fantastic E101.

Used to own this cabinet card. Had Graig Kreinder paint it.

98 years ago today, the Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Senators played Game 2 of the 1925 World Series wearing black armbands to honor the diseased pitcher/patriot.
(Unfortunately, I do not have a photograph showing an armband. Or at least I can't find one. Anybody have one?) |

I always liked this photo. Matty and Tillie Schaffer 1912.

John Kieran quote, "Mathewson was the best pitcher I ever saw. He was the best anyone ever saw. Let them name all the others. I don't care. Mathewson was better."
|
Our dog is named Matty. The deal was that if we got a dog, I got to name it. My wife used to work at Bucknell, so she was on board. And for the record, getting a dog was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Cheers! Markhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...1a7b2e6f57.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Matty is my favorite pre war player,
Here is my prized possession, a Matty I got off the board. Still love it! Hoping to get a white or dark cap down the road |

Big fan of Matty. I always feel like i should be buying more of his cards, they seem relatively calm Price-wise compared to other greats.

Great Matty's
I always thought the W600 rookie was pretty scarce but a couple have been posted here! Amazing e107, Darren |

1903 Falk studio team postcard taken at the Waldorf Astoria with young Matty front and center. Possibly the earliest baseball postcard

One of my favorite pitchers. I can't imagine what Matty's record would have looked like without the war years and mustard gas. - |
