October 2023 Pickups

4 Attachment(s)
Ended September on a card rampage at a show, making some great grabs...

It started with some real nice 1972 high numbers and stars, including a sweet Ron Cey RC (sort of a semi-important, forgotten card from the high series)...

Attachment 591422

The same seller had a nicely-centered Carlton Fisk RC with the high numbers and stars, and then he had a PSA 6 in his case for $10 more than the ungraded one. Decisions, decisions. Didn't want to choose, so I ended up negotiating a price to take both of them home instead...

Attachment 591424

Next, I was able to secure a quintet of rock solid, tough 1969 Topps White Letter Variations...

Attachment 591425

Lastly, but not leastly, I was able to land a trio of mid-grade (Ha! Mid-grade, my ass!) incredible all-time greats. Willie Mays and Hank Aaron are both new grades, so they look so much better than what the number says they are. Look at the incredible black of the '71 Mays. That's 8-worthy!! And 'The Left Arm of God' is also suh-weet..

Attachment 591423

What a day!!!!!

Nice haul, wish my local shows had stuff like your show!

All very nice cards. I don't understand what PSA looks for on the 71s. I sent in a few a couple of months back (I thought they would be 7s and 8s), when I got them back they were all 4-6. Five to ten years ago they would have been 7s and 8s, no doubt.

Congrats!

Great cards, Jolly!

The Ron Cey/Ben Oglivie/original Bernie Williams, and Carlton Fisk/Cecil Cooper are two of the best multiplayer Rookie Cards out there.

I guess the "in action" card of Seaver is him doubled over in laughter? Never seen that one before.

I frickin' love that Seaver IA card!!! When I was a young Mets fan (and still today as an old one), I couldn't for the life of me figure out what in high heck was going on when the photo was snapped. Was Don Rickles doing a tight five at Shea that day?? The fact it's so different than any other action card ever makes it a source of eternal fascination to me!

I sort of buried the lede. ALL of this stuff came from my many visits to the same dealer. The rest of the (pretty huge) show was museum priced...so when I found his table, I latched on. His sticker prices were all based on recent eBay sold prices. As I checked my phone for sales data on any card I was interested in, it was obvious that that's exactly how he established his pricing. Then I bundled stuff together and got him to go lower. Anything I wanted that I didn't buy on my first look was gone by the time I returned a little while later. He was doing a brisk business.

What a wonderful card collecting world it would be if others followed suit.

Jolly, fantastic '72s. My favorite set of the decade! Good luck on getting your SGC slabs back - is that today?

This was in my mailbox about half an hour ago. I got lucky the slab was not cracked with bozo seller using a thin bubble mailer and nothing else, but I will take it!

Sometime back, I had sold my last card picturing Willie as a NY (and not SF) Giant, and I felt a void in my collection. This won't win any 2nd glances from the centering crowd, but anymore I go for strong image and color quality before all else as long as a card is not miscut - and this fit the bill. I sold a nice copy of this card when I was 15 in the early 90's for 70 bucks, I remember for whatever reason. Unfortunately today they aren't quite that cheap, but at least I own one again. Happy October all!

I got this card at a show maybe 6 months ago, with a few others. Guy was selling some really nice raw 56s, and this one in particular was a standout. When SGC dropped their price recently I figured I would send this in and it should get a 7 maybe even an 8. Well it got an 8 and looks terrific in a slab. As many people here already know, Sammy White was a solid catcher for the Red Sox in the 1950s who opened bowling alleys after retirement. They used to film candlepin bowling from his Brighton alley back in the 70s and 80s. Those Saturday shows hosted by Don Gillis were hugely popular. The bowling alley also had an horrific quadrouple murder back in 1980, but came back and stayed in business until 1986 before it got bought out by an Acura Dealership that is there to this day. My mom used to take me and my sis there back in those days, although I recall her not letting us go for a while in 1980 and 81. Anyhow, I have never been nutty about 56s, but this one has me changing my tune. .

Was at a show yesterday and this guy had a bin of "uncommon commons" from the 1960s. I wasn't really in the market but I started thumbing through and these cards looked like they came from a time machine. Absolutely blazing colors, sharp corners. Seeing as how they were in the $2 bin I picked several out and figured when I got home I'd find a microscopic wrinkle here or there, but no. These cards are F'n beautiful and are unexpected adds to my raw post war collection.

On Saturday, my best friend who I consider as my brother gave me his baseball cards that he collected as a kid- 1967-1972. The largest group was the 1968 Topps- 420/598. The 1967 and 1969 groups have less than half of the available cards (there were no 1967 high #s). None of them contain any of the major stars and the condition in general is very good at best and I'm going to finish them as they are. I'm going to start with the 1969 set as it is the least expensive to complete. Hopefully, I can get the missing cards through trades.

Phil aka Tere1071

Nice haul Jolly, I always thought that Seaver card was his reaction to a called ball that was a strike.
Let me know if you need the McCovey white letter to go with those others and I'll sell you mine.

October 2023 Pickups

Nice stuff, everybody. For the first time in a few months, I visited LCS #2 today, and got lucky enough to be able to trade for this card, which apparently had not been in the shop for long. The grade is due to some light wrinkling over the inset picture, which is not super noticeable on the whole. I’m very happy with the presentation and eye appeal. This is a card that I originally bought in college back in the ‘90s for like 70 bucks, probably in nicer shape than this even then, but of course I didn’t hold onto it. A shame they don’t go for that anymore, but at any rate I’m thrilled to be able to finally add this back to the collection.

I think he’s holding him, maybe singing a lullaby after that collision caused him to drop the ball. [emoji38]

Got a couple of mid-grade Micks (from fellow net54 members) to knock off of my Graded Mantles Checklist, and for my 'Recurriations' brethren, look at the wickedly tough 'Santogreenmustachio' I was able to land...

I’m thrilled to finally pick up this card. Eddie is my favorite player. The centering isn’t bad for this card and the marker doesn’t bother me at all.

What a cool little bit of hobby history that card relates. The Braves went to Milwaukee in 1953, so that "Boston" was Xed out probably by a kid opening packs and amalgamating his cards into team piles (with his 'old' cards) right around that time, maybe even early in 1953. Excellent.

Great looking card Mike, congrats on thr pick up.

That was my thought exactly. Some kid picked this up after the Braves moved to Milwaukee and crossed out Boston.

More recent LCS pickups; photo stream vomit edition…Yes, the '65 Kaline requires either 3D glasses or a dime bag to view properly. What, you may ask, is Braves scrub Gary Geiger doing among some of these better known names? Well - Gary happened to be a $3 '67 high number. Now don't get too excited, he's not an SP high number, but - that's still pretty cool and I'll take it:

I know what he's doing; Red is doing the same thing he would later do to Mickey Mantle during the 1957 World Series, purposely trying to injure Mick. Red succeeded, causing Mantle great pain, affecting the rest of his World Series, and bothering Mick until 1960. Not good. --- Brian Powell

That Kaline misprint is a thing of beauty.

Nice picks all around, guys. I didn't really have anything post-worthy in October. The one card I was excited to add (a Sommer & Kauffman) turned out to be counterfeit, so back it went for a refund. I did close the month with a handful of really clean, flat 1970 Kellogg's 3Ds at a local show. I have a small collection of them that I got back in the 1970s and have always stored flat, so they never cracked. Finding uncurled, uncracked Kellogg's is getting harder and harder.
