It occurred to me today that when Alan Rosen made his great find of '52s, the cards were 34 years old and had already been established as rare, valuable and 'something special'.

Flash forward to today - it'd be like someone calling you to say they found a case of 1989 Topps.

For some reason, whether to do with how old we've gotten, how much the hobby has changed, the lack of any true value in 'modern vintage' or whatever, I find that thought vaguely depressing.

I remember all of those pictures of Rosen, on books, magazines, newspapers (etc.). The guy always had the biggest, friendliest smile on his face. Every photo - big, bright, beaming smile. Then you'd encounter the guy at his table at a show. Always had the big scowl on his face. Would speak to you with distain. Not the same guy as in the photos.

In the ad photos, he was always holding a huge wad of cash. That would put a smile on anyone's face!:D
