It's silly, but what was happening that day??

At the bottom left corner of the main page, there is the "What's Going On?" section that I am sure 99.9% of members never even look at. But whenever I see it, I can't help but wonder about the little nugget of information it has contained for over seven and a half years:
"Most users ever online was 8,305, 01-17-2016 at 07:06 PM." (Arrows added below for emphasis.) Does anyone have any idea what in high heck drove so many people to the site on that particular day and time???? That's over three times as many visitors as when I took the screenshot today (2602). If you have a supposition, do tell! And wild theories, speculations and conjectures are not only accepted, but expected!!! :D What was going on January 17, 2016 at 7:06 PM that drove such a swarm of people to a baseball card collectors site??? Had to be a auction, since it was Sunday
|
Just now it says "1543" viewers on the main page. Earlier this Summer it would say "93" or "141". I am guessing it was showing logged in only before, and now it shows all logged-out "readers"?
Was 2016 when that guy photo-shopped a T206 Wagner into his hand in a selfie? |
It had to be one of the train wreck threads that pop up now and again.

My guess would be the first female subscriber to the sub...

Maybe the 1’st appearance of Skydash or pictures of his collection, man it was incredible as were the items he mentioned that got lost.
|
I'm not finding the "What's Going On" section? Help.
|
Leon might have a better idea, but I'm guessing Google bots or advertising bots. I think that total can include guests or people with no username.

Skynet became self-aware and invited all his robot buddies to come over to see his rookie card of the Mechanical Man, Charlie Gehringer.

Click on "Home" then scroll toward the bottom and you will see it towards the bottom left above the "Shop Ebay Promotions" It's a little confusing because "Home" is different from what you get to when you click on the "Net54 Baseball Homepage" link on the top left. |
Archive took over the program and started answering itself. ( Old Net54 joke)

The Mastro shill bid list was released in early 2016. Closest guess I have.
|
I'll bet it had something to do with that Battlefield dude...
The guy that would doctor scans on eBay to turn a VGEX card into NM, shill bid his auctions, etc. Then when he would get called out about it, he would always have a snarky response. If I remenmber right, he went so far as to threaten people with bodily harm whenever he was losing an argument over something trivial. Fun times! |
The Democratic debates were that night and it was a Sunday night in the middle of winter. Probably just happened to be a lot of people at home.
|
In addition to the democrat debate, an arctic cold front hit the northeast:
(From weather.gov): January 17-19, 2016 Snow Event Heavy Lake Effect Snow Hits Northeast Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania An arctic cold front moved east across the Great Lakes Region on Sunday January 17th, ushering in the coldest air of the season. Most of northern Ohio received a light coating of snow as this system moved through, with snowfall totals ranging from a trace in Toledo to several inches of snow across the snowbelt region of northeast Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania. Heavy lake effect snow then developed on Sunday night and continued at times through Tuesday as a prolonged period of west to northwest flow set up across Lake Erie. Lake Erie is experiencing below normal ice coverage this winter due to warm temperatures in December and early January. The lake was mostly ice free east of the islands which supplied the necessary moisture to maintain a prolonged period of lake effect snow. Westerly winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph accompanied the snow. Areas outside of the snowbelt may have escaped the snow but did not escape the cold as wind chill values dropped to between zero and -17 on Sunday night. Steve |
Plus there were a couple NFL playoff games. A lot of sports fans watching TV and screwing around on the internet. I'm almost surprised there were only 8k. 🙂
