A Player To Be Named Later
 

With the trade deadline behind us I would like to know who the most famous or successful player is who was ever a player to be named later in any trade.

A corollary question would be “Is there a player to be named later in the Hall of Fame?

Has a player to be named later ever been named later again in a second trade?

Who is your favorite player to be named later?

Should there be a Hall of Famous Players to be named later?

Yankees got Doug Drabek as a player to be named later for Roy Smalley.

Then just before he became a very good pitcher, they traded him for Rick Rhoden.

David Ortiz was a player to be named later.

So was Trea Turner.

Apparently "Shoeless" Joe Jackson was a player to be named later in 1909:
"There was no question that young Joe Jackson could hit. In his first Major League game with the Philadelphia A's late in 1908, the 20-year-old picked up a hit and an RBI -- enough for the local papers to dub him "the find of the season" -- and he followed it up by leading the South Atlantic League in batting average in 1909. There was a question, however, as to whether the South Carolina native could handle playing in the big city. He celebrated that sparkling debut by sneaking back to his hometown due to homesickness, and he never seemed fully comfortable with Philly life. After struggling as a late call-up in 1909, legendary manager Connie Mack decided to cut bait, including Jackson in a trade to Cleveland for Bris Lord and $6,000. The rest, as they say, is baseball history.

Harry Chiti!
 

In April of 1962 the worst team in Baseball, the Mets, acquired a backup catcher named Harry Chiti from the Indians for a player to be named later.

After watching Chiti at the major league level for a few weeks, The Mets made Chiti the player to be named later and shipped him back to the Indians.

To be clear, that was when Ortiz was traded from the Mariners' organization to the Twins.

Thought of all of Lou Piniella's "Rookie" cards, so looked him up and sure enough he was a "player to be named later", being shipped from the Senators to the Orioles in 1964.

64 Senators, 68 Indians, and 69 Pilots, all multiplayer rookie cards. Insane. Bill Davis had FIVE but only two teams. But the great thing about Davis is after 5 consecutive rookie cards he was gone, never had a solo card.

…and then the Twins just straight up released him after a not exactly horrible 2002, because they didn’t want to pay him 1.2 Mill in arbitration money?

Have two teams ever misjudged the same player as badly before?

At least the Indians and Athletics got “something” in return for Roger Maris.

Cubs and Lou Brock comes to mind, and the Hershel Walker trade.

Brock was part of a lopsided trade…but not a “player to be named later”.

I have an August 29th, 1996 Mariners stub from the day the Twins traded Dave Hollins to the Mariners for a player to be named later. Twins got Papi in September 13th

Brock was named in the same breath as Ernie Broglio.
