Just saw this on Twitter. I have never ever heard this, and the # seems a little ridiculous to me. Can anyone comment? Anyone seen this before?

The estimate seems extremely high to me.

Very interesting to learn about the foul pole which it makes sense now. So my question would be if the ball hit the foul poll back in 1917, would it be called a home run or foul?

Yeah, doubt it was more then a handful at most...whatever their convoluted rules were back then. ...and if Rickey Henderson played by the same rules as Billy Hamilton, he'd have 55 million stolen bases right now. :D |
Also
I haven’t checked this out but I believe “back in the day” a walk off home run at the end of the game with men on base was only counted as a home run if the batter needed to score to win the game…. otherwise scored as a single double or triple….. would have to check that one out……

Great article. Had the correction been applied, all else being equal, the record breaker would have come three days later off Charlie Hough. Fortunately we still would have had Vin Scully on the call. Gosh though, would someone at Topps recognizing Aaron as 3 short of the record rather than 2 nixed cards 1-6 in the 1974 Topps set? |
Another twist on Ruth's greatness was written by Bill Jenkinson in 2007. His grandson and my son just graduated high school together in PA and we've had a copy for several years. It's a pretty exhaustive researched book where he makes the case that Ruth would have hit 104 home runs in 1921 playing in today's parks and under current rules. Interesting take, for sure!
