With today's pitch clock, I would love to see how Hargrove's routine would look speeded up.

Always a fan of a man that embraces the name "Puddin' Head" so much that he changes his signature -

Love these names not sure if they are all politically correct but interesting and entertaining

I was just thinking about Dick Pole today. If anyone is interested, there are multiple game used jerseys on Ebay right now. That's the mark of a true fan.

That name always conjured up an image of a west coast hot rod builder or a surfboard shaper for some reason.

Or maybe it is the infamous hit by Jerry Mungo in 1970 that's triggering me.

There was a minor league outfielder from 1949 to 1954 named K Chorlton. Yes, K was his given first name.

paul 08-08-2023 06:39 PM

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Calvin Coolidge Julius Caesar Tuskahoma McLish.

Former Tigers shortstop Coot Veal. He was born in Deepstep, Georgia (great name for a shortstop's hometown) in 1932 and is buried in Macon, Georgia -- home of what IMO is the greatest pro team name ever: the Macon Whoopees (Southern Hockey League, 1973-74).

I always felt Mickey Klutts was an unfortunate name for a ballplayer.

My favorite of all time, mentioned in the OP, is Phenomenal Smith. Classic!

I've also noticed that recent MLB drafts have features some pretty interesting names at first overall:

2015 - Dansby Swanson
2019 - Adley Rutschman
2020 - Spencer Torkelson

With a name like Swackhamer, he should have been a power hitter, but he never made it out of the minors.

289. Guffawbulous
Having a name (Eddie Stanky, Heinie Manush, Johnny Pesky, Tom Tresh, Pete LaCock, e.g.) that causes every single collector alive to giggle a little bit whenever they run across one of his cards.
