Favorite Modern Cards
1 Attachment(s)
Most of my collection is pre and post war, but these are my two favorite modern baseball cards, and it's not even close. Honorable mention to cards like 89 UD Griffey, FF Ripken, and rookies like Gwynn, Cal Ripken, and Rickey Henderson.
What are your favorites? |

I have one modern that kind of stands out from the rest.

Love the signed rookies, been picking up a few here and there as well.

I normally only collect rookies in the modern era, but the 93 refractors are an exception. Amazing cards and huge historically. I had a Griffey 9 but STUPIDLY sold it years ago. Now they are prohibitive.

When it comes to design and creativity, modern rules the market. It's like watching an old 70s movie vs a 2023 movie. The old movie may be cool, but the special effects, quality and everything else technology brought makes for a much "better" show. There are so many incredibly cool cards, it's hard to pick. The old standard Topps has it's appeal, and of course value, but they are fairly boring.
I collect everything, so I have never excluded anything. Diecutting, lenticular, acetate, dufex to start. Sometimes it goes too far, but to each their own. Here are two that I think are extra cool. Value and star power usually sways most peoples decisions when it comes to showing off the "best" cards, but there are plenty of cheap cards that are equally as cool. I have these 2 cards, but the 2 shown are not my copies, I just grabbed scans off the internet. |
These for various reasons are my favorites. A few are the rookie cards of players I enjoyed. A couple are just great looking cards, and one has some fun memories attached to it.

I remember opening so many Donruss packs as a kid hoping for one of those elite cards. Especially a signed one. No luck. Although a couple years ago I did pull one out of one of those repackaged boxes from Walmart. They were almost like a myth back then, same with that Thomas NNOF. My friends and I had heard of them, but never actually saw one. |

Some of my favorite modern are the recent Stadium Club releases with some beautiful photography of the greatest of the past mixed in with todays players. Worthless base, but the fun is in the cards.

Mine would be memorabilia cards of my favorite player, Roberto Clemente.

Tiffany. It just makes birds sing in your ears. I guess I'm old enough to find these cool. I don't think my son cares. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...5354d9f139.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...62ea34fa70.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...d55c6b3a1e.jpg

I pulled the Epix as a 12yo, pulled the Laser as a 10yo, and bought the Statistical Standouts cuz it was a card I always wanted. It's gorgeous!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...8ea1dbbf16.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...1758416e12.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...db35eb5cf9.jpg

Love all these sets regardless of player shown. If anyone has the more limited Call to Arms of Larkin, and you're looking to sell, I am a willing buyer.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e82aa7ef05.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e05f0d44ab.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9788458c62.jpg

Does anyone else get messed up between the old SGC and new.... It only happens to me on the 10s, so for instance here I was thinking that's a great looking card, what's wrong with it. Before I realized it's the new slab and the answer is "nothing" ....
Great cards. Quote:

The majority of my modern cards are hockey cards but I do have some baseball cards as well if they qualify?

Not one of his more popular RCs, but I'm partial to this Pujols.

The other day my son was digging in the stacks and came out with one of those Skip Schumaker Rally Squirrel cards and just loved it. He stole it for his collection like he always does, but truthfully they are all his anyways, lol. I love those moments. |

Needless to say, after doing some digging, there it was placed right back in the wrapper likely on the same day I pulled it back in 93. :) I also forgot about this card I purchased back when Marcus set the second baseman record while playing for the Jays. I think Marcus Semien is also having another great year while currently playing for the Rangers? I was upset the Jays didn't resign him, but, IIRC, Marcus wanted too much money or a longer term than the Jays were willing to offer? |

2014 Topps Heritage Judge
I tried winning this on eBay and got sniped last second. I never thought I would have a chance again being a 1/1 but five years later, it was back on eBay as a BIN...I didn't hesitate! It goes very well with my signed Heritage Judge.

I like this Judge, in part because I believe that other than Topps' refusal to give it a RC logo, it should be his true RC.

He was also great for the younger Jays players, especially Bo Bichette, who became great friends with him. I believe they called him Dad or something similar to that? Sometimes not all things can be just measured by how they play in the field. I believe Semien's clubhouse presence alone during his time with the Jays was a reason why they did so well while he was there. |
1992 Score Impact Players

When I put together the 1992 Score master set a few years ago, I discovered this hidden gem of a set - the photography is beautiful, as is the feel and look of the cards. One of my favorites of the era.

A couple I purchased after his 62 hr record.

Not baseball, but one of my favorites is an autograph card issued in 2008 by Tristar showing TNA wrestling broadcaster Don West.
Of course I didn't get it because of his association with rasslin', but because of his prior incarnation as the over-the-top sports memorabilia pitchman at Shop At Home. I just found it ironic that a guy who used to push the stuff now had a signed card of his own. https://live.staticflickr.com/3233/2...ea331d0e24.jpghttps://live.staticflickr.com/3135/2...59588c02bc.jpg Just to add to the silliness, the signed card was also issued in a numbered color variant, and in one-of-one printing plates. https://live.staticflickr.com/3265/2...607f4dd2fc.jpghttps://live.staticflickr.com/3127/2...3535801c81.jpg Verifying on another one! :D |
