Pitcher trivia

By Baseball Reference standards, name the three pitchers eligible for the Hall but not enshrined with the highest career WAR.

Without looking it up (obviously) I’ll go with Clemens, Schilling…. And maybe Tiant?

I should clarify. I did not mean to include steroid exclusions. Schilling is right, Tiant is not.

I know Jim McCormick is one of them.

Just one more to go. But for fun let's expand it to top 5. Tiant is not in the top 5, he's 6th.

McCormick is in the 70’s, off memory I think Tiant is the mid 60’s. I can’t think of anyone definitely over him. Are Bobby Mathews and Tommy John in the top 5? They seem like the type to be around there bulking lots of good seasons

Neither of those. One is an old timer, two more modern.

Some lump him in with the 'roids users, but I think Kevin Brown has a pretty high WAR.

Correct. 2 to go.

BobbyStrawberry 06-07-2023 12:18 PM

Bobby Mathews?

cgjackson222 06-07-2023 12:19 PM

I never understood why, but Rick Reuschel's WAR is up there.

Yes it is. One more, a 19th century pitcher.

Caruthers?

frankbmd 06-07-2023 02:37 PM

Jim McCormick

Isn’t Tony Mullane correct?

Was confused, is "yo" yes in ireland? Tony Mullane was Irish as I'm sure you know.

BobbyStrawberry 06-10-2023 02:35 PM

Interesting to look at overall WAR vs pitching WAR - Mullane was a better hitter but Mathews (62.3) is higher than Mullane (61.0) going by the latter.
