191? White Sox, Fantasy Piece?
1 Attachment(s)
Someone just emailed me with questions on this. Claimed it was Black Sox but Wolfgang wasn't on the team in 1919 and there's no Cicotte or Weaver.
Can't find anything in a quick search but figured I'd ask if anyone here had seen it whether they're cut outs of some sort, fantasy pieces (which is what I lean towards with the Joe Jackson being the only one with a border) or by some miracle something legit. |
And I think I just answered my own question. I couldn't make out the label in the lower right. But finally figured it out. Review of Reviews was a magazine, so likely cut outs.

These are from a set created probably sometime in the 2000's. Here is a couple of images from a listing on Ebay. On the box seen below it mentions that these were designed by TNTL Studios.

It is hard to tell by looking at the photo on my phone, but my gut tells me that yours is one of the reprint sets. |
Good recall Kevin. I was pretty sure I remembered that there were original cards out there, but when I saw that "designed by" on the back of the box I showed, I second guessed myself. Perhaps they are giving themselves design credit for the box and the colorization of the Jackson card.

Sorry I should have updated. The fact that Jackson is in a black border is the dead give away. In the "1919" Black Sox set that is sold in a box only the actual participants in the scandal got the black border. So clearly the Jackson is modern. If he's modern why would any of the others be authentic? Has NOTHING to do with the magazine. I guess that was just a red herring.
