Baseball expressions that grate
Listening/ watching 1000s of games, there are just some random baseball expressions that are like nails on a chalkboard to me. Some are old and some are new. Irrational dislike of them every single time I hear them.
Watching Mets game tonight and the bases are loaded. Two outs. Full count. And invariably someone will say “the merry go round will be in motion….” Don’t know why but I just can stand that one. Any ones that annoy you every time? |
"Nice piece of hitting"

May I never hear "little roller [up along first]" again.

baseball expressions
Anything "walk off"- just say "game winning". Trent King

Calling a pitcher who pitches 6 innings and gives up 3 runs, a quality start. A 4.50 ERA shouldn't be considered good.
"Can of corn" always hated the expression. |
'are you kidding me?'

Hate it
“A quality at bat” when a guy fouls off 3 or 4 pitches …….

swinging bunt

One that is old and new, but with different meanings.
Old, the guy who messed up was the goat... like Merkle It wasn't common, and was out by maybe 86? I don't recall Buckner being called that. New, and acronym for greatest of all time. Just stop the textspeak, and say that. It's both confusing AND annoying all at once. |
How about "steady diet of "Certain" pitches

Credit to the Mets but so many mistakes in the last few innings led up to that play. It was absolutely uncanny. Don't even get me started on game 7. I will never get over the nightmare of seeing Schiraldi coming in again. |
" A swing. And a miss"

Youkilis announcing with the Red Sox
Sadly, with the death of Jerry Remy and the retirement of the beloved Dennis Eckersley, Red Sox Faithful are now saddled with Kevin Youkilils...aka broadcaster wannabe.
His incessant use of "right there" is worse than nails on a chalkboard. He also goes into such painful analysis of the strike zone and other over the top comments about either fielding or hitting, as to make the mute button a blessing. His most obnoxious however is indeed "right there". Addtionally, at the beginning of last night's Red Sox game in Philly, a fan, while reaching for a ball, fell into the bullpen. He was carted away with injuries unknown. Odd, I thought that Youkilis would comment "I hope it's not a Red Sox player", then a pause followed by "or a coach". Geez Youk, how 'bout just hoping the best for whoever it was, not just eliminating any Red Sox personnel. Bush league at best! |
