Mail-Ins, Premiums, and Prizes
 

I'm fascinated by prizes and mail-ins, anything you had to collect X amount of and send in to get. Anyone have any cool mail-ins or premiums?

The cards themselves were actually “Membership Certificates.” Each card/certificate had a value of seven cents. Children were to be given one of these when they purchased a bank stock book or tablet, as indicated on the backs. They were then to give the certificate to a teacher, who could redeem them for five percent back.

As the back explains, thus, if a teacher mailed in 1,000 certificates, they had $70.00 worth of them. They would then be given 5% of that amount ($3.50 in this case) to be used towards the purchase of school or playground equipment. The cards would be sent from the teacher to the Western Playground Association in San Francisco (which, of course explains the Pacific Coast League tie-in as a west coast company).

I imagine 6 cents was a bit of money in 1906

CPI inflation calculator says 6 cents in 1906 is the equivalent to $2.01 today.

Yes, pretty rare issue, I believe Leon had the complete set at one point.

Love the premiums. I consider this one a premium, but it could probably be debated it's a photo. Not sure how it would have been distributed.

Not quite pre-war, but from the 40s.

Speedway 79 "Tiger of the Week" premium from 1948.
An early George Kell Tigers appearance with the Tigers.
It comes in at a whopping size of 8"x10".
My scanner is making it look toned, but it is a crisp glossy black and white.

Does anyone have some examples of the early Bowman promo items?

I have seen photos of the baseball and one basketball ring that I lost out on. Still looking for the 1948 Basketball ring for my own collection.

Wheaties , Breakfast Of Champions : Never turn your back even for a second when you're chatting at a card show with Bob Feller ( sadly, not a problem anymore , RIP, Rapid Robert).
So now I have to keep on searching for an unsigned one. I don't care for autographs except when I have no choice .
Mr. Feller was a big fan of Little League activities in Pennsylvania and did many appearances , usually very graciously , plus he enjoyed catching the old Reading Indians games (now a Phillies farm team though ).
