1950 Dr. Pepper Baseball Photo Key Chains

I recently picked this up in a lot of soda memorabilia. It is an order form for Dr. Pepper premiums, one of which is key chain featuring famous big league stars. I can't remember ever seeing one of these and was wondering if anyone had. The expiration date is April 30, 1950.

Seen a few, always wondered about their origins.

I have and finally remembered where I had seen them. They are used sometimes
as hangars on pins along with the ribbons...;););)

After many years, I'm really happy to learn the origins of these key chains! I've accumulated the 12 pictured over a few decades and know of 11 more. The players in this series that I have, or know of, only intersected with their respective teams from May 16th, 1949, when Bob Ramazzotti was acquired in a trade with the Dodgers, to June 15th, when both Harry Walker and Peanuts Lowery were traded to the Cincinnati Reds. Thanks so much for posting!!

Great information, guys! Do you know of any Giants, Andy?

(Like I need something else to look for) :p

Hi Rob!

Unfortunately, of the 23 I know exist, there are no Giants. Here are the players/teams. I cut and pasted this so they are only in order by the ones I have on top and others known on the bottom. I don't recall the Yankee player but remember seeing one for sure. Seems to be a Cub heavy promotion...

CUBS - JEFFCOAT
CUBS - LADE
CUBS - LOWERY
CUBS - REICH
CUBS - RUSH
CUBS - SMALLEY
INDIANS - VERNON

YANKEE - UNKNOWN

I had a Washington Senators SS Sam Dente at one time, and have perhaps seen another Washington player or two. Dente for sure, with yellow plastic.

Dente

Thanks Hank, I'll add Dente to my list...

Well I’m so glad that mystery is solved. I’m rather surprised that Dr Pepper wasn’t mentioned on the chip.

So cool these finally have an identification!

I am aware of three more -

Al Kozar, Washington Senators
Bob Feller, Cleveland Indians
Satchel Paige, Cleveland Indians

There are pics of each on worthpoint along with Mickey Vernon already shown.

I purchased the Satchel Paige on eBay about 5yrs ago.

Would love to find a Bob Feller for my collection.

The hunt goes on!

You’ve got to believe there were a lot more of these made than we have seen. Seeing that Satchel Paige makes me wonder what other big name players are out there.

ValKehl 03-05-2023 09:04 PM

I'd love to acquire a photo key chain of Jim "Mickey" Vernon, as he was my second most favorite Senators player when I was a kid.

jimtigers65 03-05-2023 10:05 PM

I love the fact that a kid could purchase a Jack knife with Dr. Pepper caps.

BuzzD 03-06-2023 04:32 AM

When I was a kid everyone carried a small jackknife. I guess in school nowadays the cops would be called. With age, my hands have lost some strength and now I carry a small knife again....really handy.

I'm not surprised. My guess after looking at the order form for a variety of items is that these weren't made exclusively for Dr. Pepper. I'll bet Dr. Pepper just found them available in the marketplace and ordered a quantity.

You’re probably right. Whoever the vendor was who came up with the idea of using them as a hanger on pinbacks was genius.
