Will there be a 2023 Topps Heritage set?

Does anyone know if there will be a 2023 Topps Heritage set coming out? If there is going to be one, I can't find anything online about it.

frankhardy 02-03-2023 02:53 PM

I would hope so. Why would they stop at a 1973 design? Let's keep it going!

ALR-bishop 02-03-2023 04:28 PM

I have no idea. At one point I thought I would stop at 1972, but decided I would go until 1975 if I and the line get that far. While I have all the regular sets before and after that date they just don’t have the same appeal to me beyond 1975. But I am sure younger collectors probably feel differently.

Forgive me if I am misunderstanding, but I think you are asking due to the Fanatics license.

To that end, the best answer for all Topps products is “no one has any idea”. I do not know if the Fanatics deal with Topps included the past product design. If not, I would think Heritage comes to a logical end. If it does, then more than likely Heritage or a similar product will come back.

With all the uncertainty caused by the new agreements, it seems understandable that no announcement would take place until the semantics are ironed out and Fanatics discloses a semblance of a business plan.

Justin, yes the changes last year with licensing and Fanatics and Topps makes me wonder what is happening with the Heritage set. Usually by now there would be information about the new set somewhere online, but I don't find anything when I do a search which makes me think that there is no Heritage set being released this year.

Yes, in the complete seeming vacuum of information I have seen. Even, with the rights a full year off would not be surprising.

Maybe, they also have a tad of logic and understand the saturation and overproduction of the past 5 years and are doing marketing analysis. Hopefully…

Although I like the 50s and 60s sets, the 70s were when I came into collecting and the 75-78 run is my favorite. Would be cool to see them through that time frame.

I really enjoy the autographs of common players theme. Topps didn't issue a Wes Parker, which for whatever reason why not, is a huge bummer for me. One of the few long time Dodgers that doesn't seem to have a pack issued autograph.

Gary Dunaier 02-05-2023 05:56 PM

I don't see any reason why there wouldn't be. I like Heritage, although there are two big things I hate about it: they should have started a year later, so they could advertise the cards as having 'today's stars in the classic designs of 50 years ago' as opposed to the reality of the designs being 49 years old - and, all the photos appear to be from Spring Training, whereas I'd prefer more photos taken inside actual Major League ballparks.

G1911 02-05-2023 07:39 PM

The odds Fanatics kills heritage is extremely low. It’s one of the most profitable products. There’s no reason to think it’s dead.

dodgerfanjohn 02-11-2023 05:19 PM

100% there will be a 2023 Heritage and near certainty it will continue into the foreseeable future. It’s a popular set and makes the company money.

They are badly behind and still issuing lots of 2022 sets. Expect 2023 sets to be released way later than normal.

packs 02-13-2023 10:17 AM

I do wish they'd improve the product though. The relic OR autograph is such a bummer.

I love pulling an Aaron Hicks relic card that doesn’t even promise it’s from a major league game or has anything to do with Hicks in every box.

packs 02-13-2023 03:07 PM

The worst. I love Heritage for the images and eclectic short prints but I pretty much know I’m going to get a crappy relic.

Kzoo 02-13-2023 06:52 PM

so lucky...

I bought 2 Heritage hobby boxes last year from the same seller at a show for $100 each. He had a stack of 4 boxes and I picked the middle 2. I got a stupid relic in the first box, then I lucked into this in the second box. It's normally a losing investment, but somehow the cards aligned in my favor.

packs 02-13-2023 08:39 PM

Wow that’s nice.

jayshum 03-11-2023 05:09 PM

I talked to a dealer at the Philly Show who had boxes of new product, and he said he hadn't heard anything yet about ordering 2023 Heritage cards yet but he said he would be surprised if there wasn't going to be one.

Rich Klein 03-11-2023 07:12 PM

Topps/Fanatics did announce at their hobby conclave a listing of sets which would not be issued in 2023 (or in some cases no more) and Heritage was not on said list.

I think we'll see heritage in the 2nd quarter of 2023

Rich

It's also an increasingly unrealistic product in terms of being true to the sets they are supposedly paying homage to. The designs are pretty spot on, but that's about it. The '22 set and the 1973 design is a bunch of boring portraits against blue sky, the occasional bat on the shoulder or faux stance. There was some of this still in the early 70's, yes - but the real '73 set was an explosion / breakout year for Topps in terms of action photos and wonky wide angle stuff. On some cards unless you were already baseball savvy, you couldn't necessarily even tell which player was the one who was supposed to be depicted. Look up the '73 Topps Pat Corrales. Corrales is writhing in pain at home plate having just been run over by Fergie Jenkins, ball still in hand.

Sadly you won't find anything remotely close to these types of photos in '22 Topps Heritage. It's still a cool set, I just wish they could be bothered to try harder.

Ok. I'll take some of that back. There are action shots, even some cool horizontal ones - in '22 Topps Heritage. (Upon further examination of cards I didn't realize I had...) I guess they still don't capture the true spirit of '73 Topps though, mainly because the pictures are probably too good - if that makes any sense. The ability to have high speed film enough to do any action shots at all was relatively new in the early 1970's, and sets such as '73 Topps reflected that. I suppose at the end of the day you can't complain a ton. Heritage overall historically has been a very nice product. '22 really is not a ton different.

Looks like the 2023 Topps Heritage set is happening with a scheduled release date of May 31.

Yes, looks like a fun set! I'm toying with breaking a box!

Is it just me, or does the sample base card have much thicker white borders than the original design? Not a problem, just jumped out at me looking at the sell sheet.

Heritage is a really fun rip once the boxes go below $60. I'll probably do 3 boxes 8 months after release. I haven't got the 2022's yet, but 73-74 aren't my favorite designs. Next year's will be a lot of fun.

Usually I can get Minors and Hi Series at the prince range you mentioned. I would love/have loved to gotten a base box for that $60 level as I think it's not been available at that price point since 2017

I got 2020 and 2021 at $60 a box with patience at shows. Sometimes a bit lower via distributors, but $60 is doable most years.

Minors falls below $60 within weeks of release. Hi gets there 3-4 months after release. Those are often in the $40-$50 range.

Maybe 50 year old Topps cards are supposed to have borders that wide. Perhaps trimming is more common than any of us could have ever imagined...
