I haven't started a thread in quite a while. How about posting anything 19th century. I'll start with a silver trophy ball from 1875.

Lucas Is it me or is the glove she is using much more modern than 1897? The Uniform .. Any other documentation than a pencil date on back?

I am not familiar with glove dating much at all. To me it looks like whatever the glove, it's far too big for her. And looking at where her wrist/arm goes into the glove is extremely loose in appearance.
It's very hard to make out the style to me. But based on the loose fitting appearance it seems to me its a "Work Glove" style glove.

I think if the date is wrong the uniform would be a much better indication. The photo shows the full thing down to her shoes very well. And I will say the shoes new victorian design matches the 1890s very well.

I also think shes wearing a head piece of some sort. With stockings pulled very high up. Similar to what was seen in female allen and ginter cards. Though a decade later would explain the addition of the glove.

Great thread Gary, thanks for starting. Here is an 1895 "Point of Purchase" piece I recently acquired in a trade with a fellow Board member. It doesn't state a date but the book was published in 1895

19th Century Baseball
 

Great items, all!
Here are a couple of early baseball items that I have in my collection.

An early colorful piece of advertising for a harvesting machine that features a Victorian era pitcher and an 1866 First Grand Annual Ball invite.
Both are fun to look at, for sure... ;)

Here is an 1887 newspaper with a story about Cap Anson and Dan Brothers. The Brothers picture was blurry so I just pictured the Anson.

My lone entry.

Made a post about this one a little while ago. Love Sharing it when I can.

One of the first images of kids and collecting cards. Not the most cordial approach from this kid but that's ok. The strategy of the day for kids was a smart one. Wait for folks to go pick up a pack of smokes and follow them to get the card.
It's an amazing snapshot of the late 1880s collecting scene and a precursor to card collecting as we know it in the 20th and 21st century.

There's also a card in the set of kids trading the cards with each other that is equally cool.

Hard to photograph this without reflections...lol Circa 1885 I believe because this is inscribed for "Throwing" not "Pitching" and the ball is being presented on the backside. If only I knew who the pitcher was....

1860s CDV Pair...Civil War and Baseball
 

I'm a little late here to Gary's 19th C. party and want to catch up a bit with these CDV images. They represent the only pairing of images of the same subject in both his Civil War officers uniform AND an 1860s era base ball uniform that I have ever seen.

The images have the pencil notation of Claes Forsgard written in the same hand across both specimens, with the Civil War image also reflecting the c. 1864-1866 tax stamp.

Both images are striking and I consider myself very fortunate to have them both as it took winning two different auctions to keep them together.

Snyder Style Bats, c. 1860s-1870s
 

These are a pair of Snyder style bats that date definitively to 1875, but research supports this model/style of bat being available and used back into the mid-1860s.

Period photography, such as this CDV recently offered in Hunts shows...upon close inspection...a fully milled down, wound handle bat with flat top barrel exact to the pair in my collection and seen in the 1875 Snyder Sporting Goods catalog.

The lighter grained example being the Ash or Willow variety with the darker one being the Fully French Polished exemplar.

The other cdv you posted is a Yale player, Richards, 1871.

"Our National Game" scrap book copyright date of 1887. Fairly common but looked for a long time to find one with all pages and cover in nice enough condition to frame. I guess I got a little carried away with the framing. Overall size is 41" by 51".

Seeing what I believe to be the cover of the colored section of the April 18, 1897 New York Herald on the other wall makes me want to look around your place...

Doug I don't have that much in that particular room because it is a small sun room but I do have a couple of other nice pieces in there, just hard to get a good picture. You are correct about the other item in the "Our National Game" picture. It is an April 18, 1897 edition of the New York Herald titled "The Winning Slide". Framed size is 22" by 30". The second picture is on another wall in the same room. It is a teachers aid copyrighted in 1894. Shows kids playing and mentions "a bat" and "a ball". It measures 30" by 48".

Tankard with an engraved Baseball scene with batter, catcher, pitcher, shortstop & third basemen. I love the batter with the handle bar mustache! Stamped on the bottom Reed & Barton and has the name Thomas Mason Carpenter engraved on the side.

Washington: First in war, First in peace, and Last in the American Association for 1884 with a 12-51 won-loss record. The Washington Nationals (a/k/a Statesmen) did not even finish the season - the team disbanded after its August 2, 1884, home loss by the score of 6 to 5 to the eventual league champion New York Metropolitans with HOF pitcher Tim Keefe, who played center field in this game. Below are (1) a scored scorecard for this game upon which is written in the right margin, "Washington club disbanded after this game," and (2) an 1884 season schedule for the Washington team upon which "Disbanded this date" is written next to the August 2nd game date. It appears to me that the same person wrote both of these comments about the team disbanding, however, interestingly, I did not acquire these two items from the same dealer or at the same time.

Great stuff everyone. Here's a mid/late 1860s baseball cdv. It's hard to see, but the bats have "Get Up & Git" carved/written on them.
