HUGE West Coast Show Coming

Rob Veres posted this on his FB page

One year ago I had my first conversation about doing a small show in the Burbank area, today we just announced that we'll be taking The Burbank Card Show to the Anaheim Convention Center. Anaheim is synonymous with legendary card shows of the past and we're so excited to land there for our third event. Wish me luck, gonna need it.

The show is scheduled for August 30-September 3 a very appropriate weekend as the Labor Day weekend was the time of the 1980 NSCC

Rich

Excellent! Since I moved down here from Toronto I've missed the access to bigger shows.

ocjack 01-25-2023 10:48 AM

Finally! Count me in. Attendance should be through the roof.

brianp-beme 01-25-2023 11:05 AM

Many good things have gotten their start in Burbank. This just might get me to attend a big card show again.

Dodgers hosting the Braves that weekend, Wow, Cool

Thanks for Sharing, This is exciting news

This should be interesting. I sure hope this show attracts a lot of vintage dealers. If it does well, perhaps they can make it a more frequent event. The Anaheim location would be great.

mr2686 01-25-2023 12:24 PM

I'm looking forward to that. I sure hope there's some autograph guests too!

oldjudge 01-25-2023 01:27 PM

That sounds great. I’m not sure you have the vintage collector base out here to support a big show and I have my doubts about a big show following so close to the National but I hope it succeeds.

perezfan 01-25-2023 04:36 PM

If you build it, they will come…

More than plenty of vintage collectors all across the west coast have been hungering for a show like this. Great travel destination for “out of towners” as well. Publicize the hell out of it, and hopefully it becomes a viable alternative to the painfully inflexible and so-called “National”.

If I’m free, I’m in!

Exhibitman 01-25-2023 05:43 PM

I passed on the show in Ontario but Anaheim is do-able so I will definitely set up there.

notfast 01-25-2023 06:56 PM

I’ve been told vintage is almost non existent at the current Burbank show. Not sure if more dealers will travel in for this one though.

I’ve also heard that they’re trying to make this a west coast national type event. Seems like a smart idea because people have been asking for one for years.

Okay, so what's the punchline? Obviously this isn't real is it?? :D. Oh, and it's about time!

isiahfan 01-25-2023 07:17 PM

Thankfully Anaheim is a lot closer than Burbank.....but I think it's unfortunate for them to pick a major holiday weekend...maybe it works for them....and I hope it does!

pokerplyr80 01-25-2023 10:53 PM

Works out well for me, I'm just a few minutes away. I will be there for sure.

ajjohnsonsoxfan 01-25-2023 11:05 PM

Excited for this. About time someone did something big on the West Coast. Could be as big as the Natty

Snowman 01-26-2023 05:45 AM

So awesome! Definitely hope to make this one.

I set up there and I was just about the only one with cards older than 2015. i did great. I had buyers cleaning out entire years of cards. I expect there will be a lot more vintage dealing locals at a bigger venue. Shows take time to build up. When I ran them we did three and never really hit our stride. It is not easy. Also gotta remember that modern has been taking it in the shorts for the last several months, so some level of modern sellers will attrit out.

Thanks Rich for sharing this information. I'm definitely excited about this and I hope to attend w/ my son.

For those interested ...there is also a large show coming to Pechanaga soon...

Table fees seem to have skyrocketed since things reopened. The last few shows I've seen advertised in Cali, fees are $500 and up per table. Is that true across the country?

Lorewalker 02-11-2023 10:52 PM

So did anyone here attend the Ontario show? I heard contrasting information in regards to vintage offerings and sales. Just curious. Thanks!

mr2686 02-13-2023 12:37 PM

I went Saturday to the Ontario show...it was pretty darn great in my opinion. It was pretty big (not National big, but the next best) and it did have a lot of modern but it also had a lot of vintage. I was able to pick up a couple of boxing cards, some 70's Sugar Daddy's basketball, a 70 Clemente and a T205 Clyde Engle. Definitely worth going and I'm betting the Anaheim show will be bigger and better. Can't wait!

Ya know what else is not super helpful? Not reading an entire thread before opening one's mouth.

The Ontario show was referenced above and no place else on this site, that I could see. Might want to take up your complaint with the promoter in the future. Not someone innocently asking a question. Now how is that for helpful?

Not blaming you...but disappointed in my other SoCal collectors for not mentioning this show at all...signed up for Burbank's newsletter going forward.

You are entirely unrealistic and inappropriate. I had no idea there was a show in Ontario until reference was made in the thread and then I looked up the show. Just as you could have done...or maybe not. Nobody failed you other than you.

For many years the conventions organized by Mike Berkus and Steve Brunner were held during the Memorial and Labor Day weekends in Anaheim and business was always brisk. There were also major shows during these weekends in Los Angeles across from LAX and at the Buena Park Hotel next to Knotts Berry Farm. It would be nice to have these shows in our backyard once again!

Oh man you're bringing back memories. I'm hoping that these shows are going to continue and they become the West Coast National that we've all been waiting for and deserve.

mr2686 02-14-2023 10:10 AM

For those in So Cal, I guess there have been some fairly large shows in Del Mar (San Diego) and they will be putting on what looks like a very big show July 14th-15th at Pechanga Casino in Temecula. If you google del mar card show it should lead you to the website. That will leave almost 2 months between that one and the Labor day show to reload the coffers.

maniac_73 02-14-2023 10:41 AM

Need some Vintage shows in Norcal. I'm dying over here!

Yoda 02-14-2023 11:40 AM

Now that shows are booming again, promoters have got to do a better job in promotion and communication. For example, a few weeks back there was a show at the Palm Beach Convention Center, which I only found about days before by word of mouth. I would have been there in a flash but had already made prior plans.

gonefishin 02-14-2023 01:57 PM

Sorry, I just opened another thread asking about the Ontario show before I saw this thread - asking forgiveness here.

My 2 friends and I just changed our plans about attending the nationals in Chicago after seeing the Burbank show in Anaheim! That's great. The last time I was there was for the nationals in 2000. Maybe that $2K expense savings from cancelling our Chicago trip can go towards purchases! Of course, that will have to be divided up between Pechanga, Del Mar and Anaheim.
