My newest HOF “playing days” card quest has taken a bit of a tangent turn….

I just picked up this amazing, original July 1869 Harpers Weekly (full edition!) with this incredible image of baseball’s first-ever professional baseball team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, with pioneer Hall of Fame brothers, George and Harry Wright.

As a cool bonus, check out the image adjacent to the Red Stocking image - an unusually busy collection of images celebrating peace…. from the US Civil War (!) which ended 4 years before this paper was produced.

I am a HOF card collector like so many of you - but I encourage you to do yourself a favor and add some breadth to your vintage collectuon and you’ll LOVE your own finds like this!

There are prior threads on here with a list of Harper’s woodcuts and another with a list of images of the 1869 team, some of which had multiple uses.

Congrats again on the pickup, You had mentioned it in your earlier thread about what may be a reasonable way to get Wright brothers images from when they played. There are some hand colorized versions out there as well, but yours as part of the complete Harper's Weekly is super. Again, congrats on a great pickup.

Thanks all - I called the rare newspaper dealer that I bought it from and they were really helpful in terms of finding a way to safely display it and help prevent light damage, etc.

The pages actually separate so it’s easy to have a double page display in my frame - the Harpers cover (“Journal of Civilization??”) on one side, and the team image page on the other. Just using a frame with UV glass like is used with artwork.

My baseball room is like a little museum right now and this will be a fun sidebar to the “tour” I like to give my guests… their interest in cards only lasts for 5-10 mins, usually!

Yes, great pickup! If you plan to pick up other woodcuts, Itoya's Profile series is fantastic for display and comes in various sizes. Here's another variation from Leslie's Illustrated. Happy hunting!

I second the recommendation of Itoya products. I swear by them for all my individual bigger than a baseball card sized flat items, and when I had a Topps collection I kept the 8 & 9 card pages in Itoya portfolios, too.
