West Palm Beach Card Show

Much to my delight and amazement, there is going to be a card show this weekend at the WPB Convention Center. I only learned about it a couple of days ago from a card-guy neighbor who said he learned there were going to be in excess of 400 tables. We are planing on going on Saturday, and I will try to report if it is worth the effort.

hmmmm

I'm kind of a couple of towns south. Never heard anything about it. Please LMK....

Please post a general review (not pre-war or vintage oriented) about how the show was

Is this another 80-20 Modern to Vintage Show ?

Here is video of the Palm Beach show I attended:

Looks like a good show. There was a nice variety. I wish I had known about the show, I may have driven down for it.
There is also a nice monthly show in Apopka just north of Orlando. It also had a nice selection of sports cards both vintage and modern.

I didn't attend due a stinking cold, but my neighbor did and he reported is was almost all modern, although a couple of tables had beat up tobacco cards.

thanks for taking the time to post

I was at the Polo match!

Glad I didn’t waste my time making the nearly 3 hour drive down there. Looks like 90+% modern from the video shot and don’t think I’ve ever seen that much space between each dealer booth before. I can only imagine that a National would take up an entire city with that type of set-up.

npa589 01-15-2023 11:29 PM

Long story short, I attempted several times to advise the card shop that hosted this event that they are going to need more vintage, because I anticipated the show would be just like it ended up. On Sunday, the guy who ran it then came to me and asked if I had advice. I believe they're willing to learn, and I do think next time it will have a greater assortment and has the potential to be a big show.

It was actually the first card show I have ever attended, so I figured I'd jump right in and set-up. Didn't really know what to expect, so I just bought 1 table. I should have bought 3 or 4. I live in Palm Beach.

I was the one at the tail end of the video that Orlando took - and
I brought a small percentage of my inventory, which was about 250 or so graded T206s and other tobacco cards, and had a binder of raw E and T cards.

John: I wonder if it was your neighbor that I spoke to? A gentleman mentioned how his friend wasn't able to come but that he would relay what I had back to him. I gave him my card. I definitely think my tobacco cards were pretty nice though and definitely not beat-up! :D

Next time, even if I'm yet again the only vintage guy in a sea of modern, I will make sure it's worth your time to come. I had some incredible conversation with a bunch of collectors - both vintage veterans and people who continued to say "I need to be buying vintage".

Here was my table. Definitely will buy several tables next time - this was basically meant to just be a learning experience for me. I joked with people that I felt like Noah, warning all the modern folk that the flood was coming and they need to get on the vintage ark. :D

You were one of the few with vintage and one of I think 3 with prewar (and only Ruth). I was there yesterday, was it busier Friday/Sat?

npa589 01-16-2023 07:36 AM

Definitely busier Friday and Saturday. I dont have another card show experience to draw upon, but it felt like it was underwhelming according to what the marketing for the show had advertised. I was not able to go most of Sunday, due to church, so I believe I missed the only substantial group that was there at 9 AM or so. Only 2.5% of my sales occurred on Sunday.

Overall, I had a lot of interest from what would have been brand new vintage collectors, but its hard for people to pull the trigger on brand new things.

Nate, your cases alone would have made me attend except for the flu I am still battling. My neighbor must have missed them but he is more a junk wax guy anyhow. I live in Palm Beach Gardens and have been pinning for a WPB show forever. I am sure another show at the convention Center would be be successful if the material was more varied, read more vintage and pre-war.

Very sorry to hear that John. I hope you feel better very soon.

This show was 100% meant to be a learning experience for me, and I honestly had dreaded the show simply because I didn’t know what to expect. Now that I have that one under my belt, I know exactly what to expect and how to plan. The next time there is a show, I will singlehandedly make sure there is a ton of vintage there. [emoji847]

There is a monthly one at the Polish club in Lake Worth that has more vintage than what I saw on the Sunday at the West Palm. You can check out the South Florida FB group that has all the local shows.

Nate, I applaud you for your maiden effort at setting up and am certain your lonely cases of pre-war must have garnered a lot of lookers and questions from those not familiar with the world we live in. Hell, I might even take my cases out of mothballs and set up should there be another WPB show with better publicity in the future. Strangely, I was not even aware of it until my neighbor alerted me. Hope your sales allowed you to cover costs and make a few bucks as well.
Flu is gradually receding and I feel almost half-human again. Thanks for the thought. John
