1968 Atlantic oil cards
Ive started looking into this set, many collector are aware of the gas station contest. Certain cards were redeemable for cash...If I recall - top prize of $2500
Obviously, why would someone NOT redeem that card for money back then, actually and of the " money winning cards are quite rare. The question - which piece / or pieces / player/players were the $2500 winner ? |
I think the $2500 Winner was Bill Freehan. I would pay $20 just to see scans of the Ernie Banks and Billy Williams winner cards. ETA apparently Tommie Agee was also a $2500 winner.
|
Bill Freehan - $2,500
Tommy Davis - $100 Tom McCraw - $10 Andy Etchebarren - $5 Earl Wilson - $1 Tommie Agee - $2,500 Ernie Banks - $100 Ron Fairly - $10 Ron Swoboda - $10/$5 Billy Williams - $5 Claude Osteen - $1 |
Sometimes people find expired winning lottery tickets that they never checked, so it's at least possible that some of the $2500 cards weren't redeemed...and lie forsaken under the back seat of a 1965 dodge in a junkyard somewhere.

I would love to see a Fairly

Do you have a complete set if you have every card that still exists, but not every card that was part of the set as produced?

However many sets like this historically count 24/25 as complete if the missing one was a redemption card like McKinley, Strong Man, etc. |
Swoboda is not the winner. It is an error. There are two varieties of Swoboda:
--Match w/#6 and collect $10 --Match w/#8 and collect $5 The #6/$10 version is common. The #8/$5 version is rare. The other cards that match with NL players 6 and 8 are: --Bunning: Match w/#8 and win #5 --Clemente: Match w/#6 and win $10 --Maloney: Match w/#8 and win $5 --McCormick: Match w/#8 and win $5 #6 and #8 are both SSP winner cards. Based on the way this charts out, #6 Fairly was supposed to be a $10 winner and #8 Williams was supposed to be a $5 winner. My guess is that the rare #8/$5 version of Swoboda was a mistake that was quickly corrected. They are out there but very, very hard to find. I've come across 2-3 in many years. Greg, the set is generally collected as a 40-card set with the SSPs being additional for a master set. There is also an instant winner card that got the winner a stats booklet. These are a lot easier to find than the #8/$5 Swoboda or the SSP winners, but is pretty hard to find. Most sets you see will be 40 or perhaps 41 cards with the instant winner card. The cards came in two-card packets surrounded by glued sides, so really nice cards are very hard to find. Most have glue damage or damage from being opened. There was a find on the West Coast about 25-30 years ago of unopened packets. I remember them being sold at LA area card shows at that time. I think most were sold off and opened. In terms of SSPs, I have seen the instant winner card, the #8/$5 Swoboda, the Osteen, the Wilson, and the Yommie Davis. None of the other 7 SSP. Here is the #8/$5 Swoboda with typical edge damage: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...5%20dollar.jpg Here is the $1 winner Earl Wilson https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...c%20Wilson.jpg Here is the $100 winner Davis: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...A%203%20MK.jpg Here is the instant winner card: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...ard%20Card.jpg Here is a high grade Aaron: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...%20PSA%206.jpg |

Here again, Net54 knowledgeable members come thru with great info
Id love to see a pic of any of the big cash cards....its hard to fathom any being around |
The Davis is one of the big cash cards: 2nd prize. I have never seen the grand prize winners.
A few more nice ones: Cepeda with the top edge of the packet intact: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...l%20Cepeda.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...%20PSA%208.jpghttps://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...%20PSA%206.jpghttps://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...%20PSA%206.jpg |
That Cash and Santo were both gift grades. Cash left edge is tore up and the Santo looked trimmed based on the lack of perforations on the right side. Also cut at top and left edges instead of de-perforated.

Yea, that grade of the Santo card is hard to understand !

I have owned and opened about 4-5 unopened packs. Also owned 2 different Clemente attached panels - sold them a while ago. As previously noted - super tough in nice shape.

Apologies for bringing up a slightly older thread, but I had a question about the 68 Atlantic Oils and was hoping someone could help.
If you've ready this thread you know these cards come with the two different backs. I call them the Rules Back and the Play Ball Back. And that there are 10 SSPs leaving a reasonable complete set at 40 cards. With the two different back variations, that brings us to 80 for a complete set (plus the Special Gift Award card makes 81). But there is another variation in this set. The black font and grey font variations. My question is, does anyone know for sure if all 80 cards come with both a black font and grey font variation making the total for a complete set 161 cards? If nobody knows for sure, I would be happy to do a survey of our cards to try to compile a list of confirmed variations to see if we can verify all of these. Thanks all, Andrew . |
Good question. I never looked. I was always chasing the SSPs.

I collect Orioles and can confirm that Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson and Boog Powell all have black and gray variations. However, my Boog Powell (Playball back) cards have different photo croppings. My Powell with the black font has more sky showing over his head than my gray font card. The name placement is also different. I haven't been able to find a gray font Powell with more sky or a black font Powell with less sky, so not sure if they exist. Both of my Powells (Rules back) are the more sky variation. Hope this helps some. Boog Powell (Playball back) variations Attachment 611988 |
Hi Alan,
Thanks for the response man. So are you saying that Frank, Brooks and Boog all have the four variations? Andy . |
