Heavy trimming and third party grading

1 Attachment(s)
I recently bought a heavily trimmed 1938 Goudey Dimaggio. I have a photo of it below with a regular sized 1938 Goudey card behind it.

My question is: How heavily can a card be trimmed before a grading company will no longer encapsulate/slab it? I know that it's different for every card, but I was just wondering if anybody has experience with this? Is there a general rule?

I reached out to SGC customer service about it and was told I needed to send it in for grading to find out.

Thanks in advance.

Corrected, since I read the whole question. I think they should give it an AUT....whether they will, I don't know.

I can't say how far they will go, but I think you'll be fine. I previously had this borderless example.

I am not sure on PSA, but I have seen far worse authentic in an SGC slab.

CSG is your best bet.
SGC has slabbed plenty like that in the past but recently seems to have stopped.

That being said if they refuse to slab it they will only charge you shipping so it's not too much money to give it a shot.

I have seen far worse trimmed cards on this site. who collects barely connected cards? Brian_p_beme or BNorth? I'm thinking of one being held together by tape. Have any of those cards been slabbed?

I am not much on graded cards anymore. When I was I tried to get this Highly trimmed Ted I put new borders on slabbed and SGC would not slab it at all. I just wanted the very obvious Authentic grade. The borders came off a 39 PB Solters. No borders bothered me way more than the added borders. I put them on with Elmers School Glue so a quick soak will make them fall off.

They said they would slab it without the added borders but I would have to pay the upcharge for the custom cut insert. They also gave it a way more than it was worth value. I was getting a Eddie Mathews rookie graded at the same time and they wanted the same fee for the borderless Ted.

Thanks everyone. I may see what happens with SGC or consider CSG.

I recently had a card with a skinned back that they would NOT grade authentic.

Since they like to cover their arses, they could just put AUT SKINNED BACK

Maybe they will read this and then do it and charge for it. But I doubt it.

Based on my previous experience, that should more than likely be fine at PSA.

That's pretty lame that they didn't slab it. Jason from Heritage just posted this Mantle on Instagram which he said he just got back from SGC this week.
