REA October Encore

How'd everybody do?

I picked up a handful of intriguing postwar oddball items for relatively modest prices, but nothing to get too excited about.

And I'm moderately pleased that the prices for the items I picked up didn't get to crazy levels. Hopefully others had some success as well.

I was blown away at the price of the Authentic Satchel Paige. I get it is a tough card to track down, but $13k for a "unique fixer-upper" seems a little steep!!

MR RAREBACK 10-24-2022 09:38 AM

To bad it went so high I was hoping to win it

HA.

It does seem like when markets get a little frothy, then there can be some "compression", when people wanting to get in tend to bid up the items at the bottom of the market.

Certainly at times the housing market has seemed that way, with entry-level homes getting bid up so much that the price per square foot on those entry level homes gets a little ludicrous compared to the prices per square foot on mid-level homes.

I rarely play in the major auctions, but since I actually won something, I figured I’d share.

Going into the T206 Southern Leaguers who appear in T210 collection:

That bottom of the market is where I live, "frothy" market indeed, I am not used to seeing such big numbers on my "well loved gems"!

I was happy what I paid for this one (in 2019), which has 3 sides less than the one that sold yesterday, so if my math is right, at $3k per side that would make mine worth $1600?!

LEHR 10-24-2022 09:52 AM

I won one photo from REA and two from RMY Auctions the night before so I'd say it was a successful weekend.

I made some good progress on my T222 set with a couple tough short prints and a HOFer.

parkplace33 10-24-2022 09:57 AM

I was blown away with the SGC3 Green Cobb price.

walker066 10-24-2022 10:05 AM

I picked up a few small items and lost out in the end on the t206 speaker psa 2 and beautiful 1954 sgc 1 Aaron RC. Wow on those prices..

Auctions, like card shows, are all about rarity or beautiful low grades. The T206 Cobbs are down I’ve noticed. Probably going to continue to drop IMO.

Johnny630 10-24-2022 10:41 AM

I wonder if the start of the next new US Equity Market Bull Run will bring these cards right back up. They haven’t gone down much, anywhere near as much as Stocks. I have a good feeling :-) that both are going up, especially the US Equities Market. Santa is Coming.

rand1com 10-24-2022 11:00 AM

The only items I ever win are mistakes on my part. I don't read carefully enough. I apparently looked up a VCP price on an OPC Gretzky rookie and bought it because I thought it was a nice bargain but the card was actually a Topps card which I noticed this morning so the price paid by me was too much.

Also, failed to read that the Connie Mack autograph on the sweet spot of a 1948 A's team signed ball was clubhouse.

So, my two wins were both mistakes. Fortunately, the amount spent was pretty small and the loss is even smaller but just goes to show I can't win anything I actually want when I read the description correctly as I was outbid on every other lot bid on in the REA auction and every lot in the Heritage auction.

That's quite the hot take.

As an Italian, I'm betting that Befana, the Italian Christmas Witch is going to bring us all some coal. Although according to my mother, naughty children are also eligible for a good whacking with Befana's broomstick.

I actually forgot the auction was closing. First time that has ever happened to me. I even looked at it earlier in the day and planned to log on in OT and chase a few things, but I got all caught up in some other stuff and by the time I remembered, it was closed. Too bad too. I was looking at the 1958 Bell Gino Cimoli and it went for about half of what I would have bid.

I encourage you to do this more often, at least whenever we're bidding on the same items.

That old Italian Witch is gonna get knocked off her broom stick by Ole Saint Nick going up up and away.

iwantitiwinit 10-24-2022 11:52 AM

I thought prices held up fairly well on T206's. I won 11 in total including 2 Magees and 3 Titus' at reasonable prices so I'm happy. If anyone needs a Magee or Titus' let me know!

I legit went after seven in extended bidding and won six. I didn't even have to escalate any of my bids.

Amazed because they were high or low?

Low, specifically for a bunch of lower grade t206 HOFers that I was bidding on. I even won one!

The Red Cobb SGC 30 (2) price seemed low

I guess its a trend that has been going for a little while, so maybe "amazed" isn't the perfect word.

Won a Billy Pierce RC upgrade for my collection - terribly underrated pitcher.

jamest206 10-24-2022 12:34 PM

Snagged the John Elway autographed items. Those will be donated auction items for a non profit benefitting veterans here in COS, if my wife needs them.

Added to my T206 portrait collection I am currently working on:

SGC 4 Red Ames Piedmont 150
SGC 5 T206 Wild Bill Donovan Piedmont 150
Also snagged a Roger Bresnahan SGC Authentic EPDG back

Love the REA auctions!

That Cobb price was low due to the quality of the card I think regardless of grade.

Good point, I agree. Two others that struck me as low:

Lot 1200 - Cy Port Sov SGC 1 (creases, but not a bad image imo)
Lot 763 - Lajoie Throwing SGC 1.5

There were a large number of graded 1971 Topps Greatest Moments cards that seemed to go for quite a bit less than what they were selling for over the past year or so when I was working on that set. It figures.

I was interested in the Leaf Newhouser that was missing a corner and had some other issues, but it ended up higher than I was hoping. It's a tough card so I guess I wasn't too surprised even in it's condition.

Always seems like prices drop after I've picked up my pieces. In part, I suspect that some of the action is just because I'm no longer bidding on them against the rest of the field...

Similar experience for me, I was quite surprised. I bid on 19 lots in extended time (mostly low grade commons), sticking to my guns on the price I wanted to pay, and won 14 of them! I did not bid more than once on any of the lots in extended bidding, or in the past week for that matter. This was a very different experience for me than the last 6+ months at REA, where my extended time bids were almost always topped and I won zero or maybe one lot if I was willing to overpay for it.

I did overpay for one card, the E101 Bender white cap, but I've been wanting a copy of this one with good eye appeal for a LONG time now :)

From a fellow set collector, congrats and good luck finishing off the set! I'm working on T205 as well. I picked up 5 lower grade commons last night that were in my price range, which puts me about half way home.

Congrats! That’s an awesome accomplishment (and an awesome set!)

Won both lots I was going for...another odd pair:

W514 Swede Risberg
1989 Upper Deck Griffey Jr RC

I used to have quite a few of those Griffey's when I was a kid, so decided to add one to my collection again at some point. It is now the "newest" card in my collection. ;) :D

Nice job! I had a bid on this as well but had to bail. Did manage to get the Nadja Bender though as consolation.

I feel like the higher end HOF’ers or rare type cards are holding value well. Lower end commons have seemingly settled and few appear to go overpriced. All that said, it’s more of what I see in my small lens of cards I collect.

I was thrilled to finally complete my general SL run by snagging a Shag. I also picked up Violat, PD back, and only need 6 more PD backs to complete a sub-run of all PD back SL’ers and 13 more OM backs to complete that sub run. I was really happy with the prices on the rest of my haul from last night, but most likely overpaid for Shag.

Great pick ups, guys.

I won the Green Cobb SGC 3.5. I think several of us actually thought it was sitting low last night, and I wanted to upgrade my SGC 2.5, so I was thrilled to get it at that price. There was a PSA 4.5 that recently sold for $43k. So I thought this was a good buy.

prestigecollectibles 10-24-2022 10:16 PM

Thanks and best of luck with your set.

someone came in hot on these two in final bidding and they quickly went from a great price to me paying a bit too much. My 1st AB back, and an "elite 12". I just learned about the latter and seems like a nice addition of an 'exotic common' in my 520 run.
