I love the private label. Al you were certainly ahead of your time on soccer. Incidentally when was the 1957 issue discovered or dated?

Great cards sorry I’m late to the party!!

Great looking cards
Sadly I never even thought about buying these kinds of cards ago and even if I did think of it I have no experience with them |
For the uninformed, because I do not collect vintage soccer, What were Pele Cards going for 5-10 years ago?

The 1958 Alifabolaget 'rookie': a PSA 5 was $4100 in 2019 and $48,000 a month ago. 1958 Rekord 'rookie': in 2016 a 4 was under $300. Last week a 3 went for $1899. 1959 Heinerle: 2018, 4.5 $460; 12/22 a 3 went for $1425 1964 Panini Calciatore: 4/17 $78 for a 7; 1/22 $830 for a 6 1971 Barratt: 2017 $25-30 for an 8; 10/22 $327 for an 8 Some cards and some higher grades have gone up even more as a % but this gives you some idea. Suffice it to say that if you bought Pele cards several years ago, you are a very happy camper today. |

PWCC sold a snapshot of Pele for over $2k recently and another auction house has another photo of his at around a similar price already with quite a few days left to run, alongside a Type II photo from the 1970s which is already over $400. These may not seem like large prices compared to what high quality vintage baseball photos can attract but the increase in value is very significant. Less than a decade ago, it was possible to buy original photos of Pele from the late 1950s for very low sums (maybe $10 to $30). I bought various items from the Pele estate sale that was held by Juliens Auctions in 2016. His entire collection was sold, including his 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cup medals. In hindsight, the prices appear low. For example, his 1958 World Cup winner medal sold for £187.5k (less than $230k). |
Thanks for all the informative information, everyone. The run up on everything the past few years has been wild, Pele obviously, no exception to that.

The Monty Gum is a horror. IMO of course.

Late to the Pele Party

Hi--I am late to the thread here, and you all have amazing Pele cards. All of the great rookie cards and quasi-rookie cards I think have already been posted (and I only have the Swedish Rekord), but I wanted to share some of my favorite Pele cards/stickers. There are so many, and they all have a story.
1. 1965 Perfetti Candy PSA 4. These were dropped in boxes of Perfetti Gum in Italy (and the UK), by the Dutch Monty Gum company. They included soccer stars and a few other sports stars too. I love how simple they are. They are really hard to find (PSA has graded 10, this is pop 2 and none higher...as a lowly 4!) 2. 1961-1962 WS-Verlag PSA 6. These are cool B&W cards. There are two Peles in the set. I love this one showing him holding the WC trophy. Not a ton of these graded either (17 total, 2 PSA 6s, 1 PSA 7). 3. 1968 Tuttosport PSA 8. The Tuttosport set was a multiport set with some actually quite popular non soccer cards, with more Dimaggio and Sugar Ray Robinson and Wilt cards graded than the 19 Peles graded by PSA. This one is pop 3, none higher. 4. On top, the upside down pair of cards is from the Tempo set, Tempo is a magazine like Time Magazine, in Italy, and they included a little set of 6 soccer star cards with the magazine in 1966 (there were more than 6 in the set). The white ones are the ones included in the magazine (20 graded) and the gold ones are from a promo set (even rarer, 5 graded). The PSA 9 regular is one of the two highest graded, and my PSA 2 promo is the lowest graded out of the 5! Anyway--there are loads of these from all over, and I have postcards, teeny tiny stickers, drawings, and so forth, and every one tells a story. Hope you don't mind my sharing a few of my favs! |

1965 Anteojito from Argentina:
https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...to%20Pele.jpeg Pop 0 everywhere. I've only seen the card 2x before this one. This is the nicest one I've seen. It was an insert in a kids' magazine, meant to be cut out and pasted into an album. |

Well, if Al hasn't killed the thread with that epic post, permit me to throw a few more into the ring:
1965 Crack, one of my favorite cards of his. Third I've owned: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...ize/img352.jpg 1968 Crack is pretty, pretty good too: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...vos%20Pele.jpg And it isn't hand cut PSA; what far recess of your butt did that come out of??? Gonna upgrade this 1960 Master Vending some day: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...ter%20Pele.jpg ' I'd like it to match my Rocky and Sugar Ray cards: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...20Marciano.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...20Robinson.jpg |

I think it spanned the years because there is one card that references the upcoming 1960 Olympics and there is a variation on Halimi which (I think) has to do with him losing his title in mid-1959 to Becerra.
|
How would you guys compare the 1958 Titulares #86 with the 1958 Aquarela in terms of long term popularity? The Titulares is tougher, but the rendering of Pele is awful -- looks like he's wearing lipstick. On the other hand, I think the Aquarela is objectively a beautiful card.
