T206 Insider Going Dark (Update: Site Mostly Salvaged)

Hi All,

T206 Insider will be going dark permanently sometime in the next few days. This is a consequence of my online database provider (knack.com) refusing to support the version of their software that I used to create the site back in 2016.

All user data will be deleted. If anyone has collection data stored on the site that they do not have backed-up I suggest they do so now.

Thanks to all who used the site. It was a fun project.

Scot

Update: It looks like most of the site will be able to be salvaged. See most recent post.

brianp-beme 10-10-2022 03:37 PM

This is a shame Scot...lots of great T206 content on the site. Here is a link to it:

That sucks Scot. Closing is the only alternative, there is nowhere else that can host it? I always liked the price checker and thought it was a great T206 resource, especially the checklists. That info be hosted elsewhere?

Sean1125 10-10-2022 04:13 PM

I think I can get the entire site preserved. Please keep it up for a few more days.

I wonder if we could somehow host it on Net54baseball? That would be a Brian and Chris question...

Bobbycee 10-10-2022 04:59 PM

Holy crap, I thought the Mets quick demise was the worst news of the week. This is my favorite site!

KCRfan1 10-10-2022 05:02 PM

Sorry Scot.

What an amazing resource.

Sean1125 10-10-2022 07:56 PM

Can anyone try and get Scot to email me? If I can get access to the backend I can get this preserved in some way... Because of how it is set up I would have an immense amount of trouble doing it w/o access.

I am talking to him (hi Scot) about getting it done to store here but any help is always appreciated. Just PM him....

Would be awesome if you guys are able to preserve the site.
Good luck!

Louisville_Hugger 10-11-2022 08:49 AM

Hopefully the members smarter than I are able to preserve this site. I’m typically on it a couple times a day…..wealth of information.

I have a dedicated Microsoft server with SQL Database with GoDaddy. I did notice that their licenses for the older program versions were eventually going to run out, and that's what basically happened. Microsoft is no longer making security updates for the current versions being run. So they are doing some crazy upgrade where nothing just moves to the new server, and everything works like before. Maybe you were using a hosting plan with GoDaddy also. If your website runs on a Windows and SQL database setup, and other offers don't work out, once I am done with the migration to Windows Server 2022, from Windows Server 2012-R2 and SQL 2014, I have no problem trying to host it on my dedicated server. I have plenty of hard drive space and monthly bandwidth, so it's no extra cost for me. I've even been waiting on T206resource to one day call it quits, and then continue to run it and make updates as needed. I'll know more after this migration from hell is over, and things are back to normal for another ten years.

parkerj33 10-12-2022 01:18 PM

who runs t206resource? and why don't they make the needed updates?

Leon 10-12-2022 09:32 PM

My contacts won't be able to do this. Hopefully someone that has the resources will.

Casey2296 10-12-2022 09:45 PM

I hope a solution can be found, such a valuable resource.

jingram058 10-13-2022 05:48 AM

Very sad if this happens. A friend of mine put together a comprehensive Lakeland International Raceway web site, a famous long-defunct drag strip just outside Memphis. All the drag racing heavies raced there, and featured prominently in the movie "Two Lane Blacktop". Then he died suddenly and eventually it became clear it would go dark. I saved the entire site before that happened, so it is at least complete in case it should ever be hosted again. Someone interested should do the same with this site.

philliesfan 10-13-2022 01:28 PM

Yes I sure hope the site can be saved. I only came across this a short time ago and yes it has a lot of valuable information. I printed a bunch of information so I will at least have that.
Bob

Bobbycee 10-13-2022 02:21 PM

Really hoping the Registry can be saved & kept active. Such a valuable site.

Bobbycee 10-15-2022 05:03 PM

As of tonight, the site remains up. Any luck with preserving the site elsewhere?
Saving/moving?

Scot, your research, your organizational skills, your effort, and your willingness to share... I find that quite admirable. All of us owe you a big Thank You. Collectors that aren't even aware of you have benefited from your efforts.

It's not gonna be a one time fix thing. Stepping back and looking at the situation, I think the problem will continually reoccur down the road. That's why we find ourselves updating our smartphones. Knowing how to 'fix' the current problem is beyond my 20th century skills. I think that all of the information needs to be stored somewhere, so it doesn't ever get lost; then as the systems and software changes, someone who's trying to rework everything to update it for the newest compatibility requirements can access the stored information.

Occasionally, I dig out your Inside T206 guide, to refresh my mind on what you wrote about some particular aspect of the white border cards. Each time I see it, I recall the first time I saw it, I read a bit on screen, then printed a copy a couple of days later. I still wonder about how kindhearted it was of you to put that out there for us for free. Thank You.

sreader3 10-16-2022 10:58 AM

Thanks to everyone for your extremely kind and generous comments and offers to help.

I believe most of the site will be able to be salvaged--everything except the ability to track registered collections by points and the "Leaderboard" feature ranking registered collections for the 524 set and various subsets by registry points.

The site will still able to track registered collections by backs and grades. So users can still register, update and view their own collections by back and grade when logged in to their accounts.

Scot

KCRfan1 10-16-2022 08:34 PM

That's FANTASTIC Scot!!!!!!

jingram058 10-16-2022 08:38 PM

This is great news!

babraham 10-17-2022 12:18 AM

Fantastic news, thank you!

philliesfan 10-17-2022 03:17 PM

This is just awesome news!

brianp-beme 10-17-2022 04:54 PM

Good to know that current and future T206 collectors will still have a place to go for some interesting info and checklists on the set.

Brian

Ronnie73 10-17-2022 05:30 PM

That's great to hear Scot. If you ever need anything in the future, I'm sure I'll still have a server and database available somewhere, with plenty of space and bandwidth not being used.

MVSNYC 10-17-2022 06:26 PM

No update it seems. I think a good chunk of us would like to know what the status currently is on all this helpful T206 info.

Brian (if I had a similar site it would be named helpfulT206info.com)

Bobbycee 11-20-2022 01:41 PM

The URL is gone for good. It was still active last week, but no more. This is a flag at half staff feeling for me as I leaned on this site for sooo much info. I also took great pride watching my set climb up the Registry. Sad day in the hobby. Collecting T206 won't be the same.

Nufced62 12-05-2022 05:11 PM

Does anyone have any updates on whether Scot Reader was able to salvage any of the site in another incarnation? This was such a valuable resource. I am a longtime collector of T206, and I have enjoyed reading others posts here.

Ron- any update or ETA on whether or not you can pick up and host the site?
It would be a shame to lose all this great data for good.

Nufced62 12-18-2022 04:27 PM

Does anyone have any updates on the T206insider site? I used this quite often to get a handle on current prices, as Scot did a great job keeping it updated.

If not, does anyone have a recommendation on how to price T206's? It seems most of the online guides I can find do not represent current going prices, even with multipliers.

Leftyndv10 02-26-2023 04:12 PM

Any update at all on if the scarcity list was preserved? That was my favorite function to refer newer collectors to the Monster set in terms of who to target/what was tough.

Bobbycee 02-26-2023 04:33 PM

Unfortunately, I think Scot has said it's gone for good. It was by far the best resource for the set. I wish another version could be started. I'd gladly subscribe just like you have to do for VCP.

sreader3 02-26-2023 07:17 PM

I want to confirm that T206 Insider is permanently defunct. I am grateful for the site’s main evangelists—Frank Burkett, Bob Commentucci, and a handful of others (you know who you are). I also want to thank Leon for trying to salvage the site—he always tries to do the right thing and we are “Luckey” to have him. I also want to give a shout out to Frank Wakefield whose post on this thread really struck me with its insight and truth. Frank has been a stalwart on this site and a voice of reason for decades. I wish I could have kept the site going. It was not meant to be.

maniac_73 02-26-2023 07:18 PM

I wouldn’t mind starting up another version of the site if anyone is interested in partnering up

I only found out about that site shortly before it went dark and found it to a great site.
I did print out several of the checklist pages like the southern leaguers, the rarities, short prints, long prints (not sure what that means).

If anyone needs a copy, I can scan the pages and email them when I get a chance. Just let me know.

Thanks,
Bob

parkerj33 10-16-2023 07:05 PM

Can anyone provide a copy of the article scott did regarding the ranking scarcity for all 524 subjects? I saved the rankings, but wanted to review the writeup that accompanied the info.

T206 List

I am new to the T206 world and have been doing my homework over the past few months. I was so excited to catch the trail of Scot Readers scarcity list and website only to find its recently defunct. I noted you posted that you had a copy of the scarcity list but were looking for the associated notes - is there any chance anyone would be willing to share the list with me?

I missed this post in February or simple don't remember it. Scot has always been responsive to any input and support I may have provided, which I also don't remember. I do appreciate the recognition though. As far as that Wakefield guy is concerned, let's be Frank.:D

T206 Resource - Scarcity Rankings

Anyone out here happen to have a copy of the "Scarcity" ranking from the original T206 Insider website????

Bobbycee 04-08-2025 03:52 PM

If we can resurrect the Dire Wolf, I can only wish T206 Insider was brought back to life!

toledo_mudhen 04-09-2025 04:31 AM

Surely - Someone here has a copy of the "scarcity rankings" that they would be willing to share - (there are at least 2 of us looking to obtain a copy)

and as mentioned in a previous post - "Any chance of resurrecting the original T206 Insider website"?

If so what would that need to look like?

Koufax32fan 04-09-2025 10:48 AM

I have some pdfs

I looked at an old computer, and I have a PDF of "Inside T206: A Collector's Guide to the Classic Baseball Card Set" by Scot. I also have a pdf of an unnamed article from the site with as listing of the factories, a listing of the backs in order of rarity and scarcity ranking. I don't think I can add the pdfs to this post, but if you send me your email, I will try to send them to you. Please note that I live in Israel and I don't check Net54 as often as I used to do when I was still in "acquisition mode" so my response may be delayed.

FrankWakefield 04-09-2025 07:21 PM

I've been occupied with other stuff for several weeks...

And this is terrible. Scot's work and his willingness to just put is information out there for T206 collectors is admirable unselfishness. Many future collectors will benefit from his work. I'm not sufficiently software-smart enough to solve nor resolve this loss. I hope someone is, and thank you Scot.
