Help With Old Judge White Whales

Looking for a particular Old Judge for a long time with no success. Perhaps I can help. Email me at oldjudge@gmail.com and let me know what you are looking for and, if I have the card available, I will get back with images and a price. I have helped many and maybe I can help you.

oldjudge 10-08-2022 09:07 AM

Four want lists shortened this week---can I help you?

Thank you, Jay for my 1st Old Judge and oldest card all in one purchase.

To top it off, it's most likely a distant relative of sorts and shared last name.

Win-Win-Win.

Thank you, Jay, already needing another. lol

oldjudge 10-09-2022 08:20 AM

You are very welcome! I have other poses if you ever decide to do the pose run.

I did and I responded back. I will resend my response.

A big thank you to the old friends and new friends who have responded to this post. The reaction has been amazing. It is wonderful to see the number of people collecting Old Judges in so many different ways. I don’t think there has ever been a more interesting set and it is great to see so many enjoying it.
BTW, anyone reading this who has an interest in the set and does not yet have a copy of the Old Judge book—order one. This is not self serving—I don’t make a penny off sales. I just think it is a cheap investment to increase your enjoyment of, and help you make better decisions involving, this set. Books can be ordered by contacting Richard Masson at Richard@ponymass.com.

Thanks again for all your help Jay! Much appreciated. I have fallen in love with Old Judge cards. Thank you for the rec on the book. Got mine and read parts of it every night.

I sent a message last night.

oldjudge 10-13-2022 08:24 AM

Mark--I did not get it. Did you send it to oldjudge@gmail.com?

Mighty Casey 10-13-2022 10:56 AM

Moments ago, I sent an email to oldjudge@gmail.com.

Thanks so much for opening the vaults, Jay!

I let Jay know about the slightly esoteric bent of my Old Judge collection (outdoor Brooklyn poses), and soon enough I had a library of choices in my inbox. Agonized for a while, then finally selected one, which was in my hands in no time and as beautiful as promised.

Schwertfeger1007 10-13-2022 09:59 PM

I've been able to build a small but incredible collection of 19th Century cards over the past couple of years thanks to Jay.

I've also sent a handful of my buddies his way looking for hard to find N172's and he's never disappointed.

Always a pleasure Jay :)

oldjudge 10-14-2022 07:25 AM

Thanks guys! It is fun, and really a privilege, to be able to help the next generation of great Old Judge collectors.

oldjudge 10-29-2022 11:48 AM

The response has been incredible. I never realized there were that many collectors working on various parts of the set. If you have some gaps to fill perhaps I can help.

BioCRN 10-29-2022 12:54 PM

Very happy with my Jimmy Ryan pickup and looking forward to hearing from you about other requests. Thanks again.

Just wanted to take a moment to endorse Jay here. I just received my first ever Old Judge from him - a gorgeous Tip O’Neill. Excellent communication, he answered all my questions, and fast, secure shipment. Pleasure to do business with - I’ll be a repeat customer.

oldjudge 11-09-2022 01:57 PM

Thanks for the kind words Chris.

sreader3 11-10-2022 04:30 PM

Not that Jay needs any endorsements but he very kindly made two nice OJs available to me at reasonable prices and hassle-free when I was putting together a Denver team collection back in the day. Thanks Jay!

oldjudge 11-19-2022 02:40 PM

I remember that well--those Denver cards are tough. Thanks for the kind words!

2nd Abner Dalrymple of the pose run thanks to Jay. Only 2 more to go!

As always, Jay is responsive, fair and extremely gracious to deal with. Not to mention, super-fast shipment!

autograf 11-28-2022 07:05 AM

super clean card and I love how that upper right "old judge cigarettes" shows how they 'pasted' that onto the negative. Very very cool.

oldjudge 12-02-2022 09:22 AM

Hi Tom! Yes, I wish they all looked that nice

Abner Dalrymple Pose Run

4 Attachment(s)
NFS. Just began collecting Old Judge within the last few months and I am proud to say I have completed the Abner Dalrymple pose run (thanks to Jay!).

Will eventually send these off to SGC, but right now I can't bring myself to stop looking at them or let them out of my sight.

Thank you, Jay, for opening your vault, your time, and your knowledge.

Jay has helped many of us, thank you Jay!

Brian, why stop at one copy of each pose, you can now chase the variations.

113-1 Hands on hips, feet apart
a. Dalrymple, L.F. Pittsburg (B-0229-A, G)
b. Dalrymple, Left Field, Pittsburg (B-0229-B)
c. Dalrymple, L.F., Denvers (Fc)
113-2 Hands on hips, L/foot behind R/foot
a. Dalrymple, L.F. Pittsburg (B-0232-A)
b. Dalrymple, Left Field, Pittsburg (B-0232-B)
c. Dalrymple, L.F., Denvers (Fc)
113-3 Throw, R/hand head high
a. Dalrymple, L.F. Pittsburg (B-0230-A, Es)
b. Dalrymple, Left Field, Pittsburg (B-0230-B)
c. Dalrymple, L.F., Denvers (Fc)
d. Dolrynigle, L.F. Pittsburg (Fa)
113-4 Bat at ready nearly vertical
a. Dalrymple, L.F. Pittsburg (B-0231-A)
b. Dalrymple, Left Field, Pittsburg (B-0231-B)

I highlighted your copies in BLUE
Dalrymple many variations spanning 1887-89.

1887
8 N172s, 1 N175
1888
1 N172*, 1 N173
1889
3 N172s

You could have a dozen different N172s!, his lone 1888 example being an interesting misspelling "Dolrynigle".

Indeed, I wouldn't have my love for OJs without y'alls book and without Jay feeding my Abner Dalrymple appetite.

Wow! Thank you for breaking this down for me Joe! Such valuable info here. Thank you for compiling and sharing.

A few questions:
1) When listing these out (ie. 113-1 Hands on hips, feet apart, a. Dalrymple, L.F. Pittsburg (B-0229-A, G)
What does the "B-0229-A" stand for and what does the "G" stand for?
2) Are some of these scarcer than others?

Yes, I believe I will set out to continue. I have already acquired 2 others (113.3.c. Dalrymple, L.F., Denvers (Fc) & 113.1.b. Dalrymple, Left Field, Pittsburg (B-0229-B)
So, if anybody knows of any the others available anywhere (including that misspelling, the GQ or cabinet), I'm all ears!

Thank you again for your work on OJs and sharing your knowledge. Much appreciated.

Joe_G. 12-08-2022 07:02 PM

Not to derail Jay's BST entry, but I'll provide a brief explanation . . .

First, we cannot take credit for the list as provided above. This is based on the Cartophilic listing, we added hundreds of additions (including Dalrymple), but credit for the way in which the set has been checklisted is owed to the British Cartophilic Society.

The Old Judge book does cover how to decode the Cartophilic listing but can be broken down as follows:

B-0229-A = Leading zero type A (flying hot dog 'Old Judge' Cigarette banner)
B-0229-B = Leading zero type B ('Old Judge' Cigarette typical in rectangular box, script at bottom)
Fa = one of two N172 types from 1888
Fc = 1889 N172
Es = Gypsy Queen
G = Cabinet

If you watch for Abner's cards long enough, you may very well discover new variations not checklisted. I suspect he had more than one pose issued as GQ and cabinet, also suspect more of his poses were issued in 1888. He could have several more variants but are all likely rare, some perhaps lost to time. Let us know if you identify a new variant, good luck!!

Let me echo what Joe said. The original Old Judge listing published by the British Cartophilic Society was compiled by the great Edward Wharton-Tigre. We just updated what he had done in the pre-internet age. He did all the heavy lifting.

Always looking For......

....John "Pa" Harkins OJ's. I have a very beat PSA #1 of pose 214-1.
The ones I have seen offered were always ill timed with my available funds or were just too pricey. So...not wanting to waste your time but feel that I should just run my "Wants" across your desk. Otherwise I focus on all Chicago material.
I would like to complement you and your cowriters on the extraordinary job in putting the Old Judge book out for all of us to enjoy !!!
Very Sincerely, Dennis

oldjudge 01-11-2023 08:51 PM

Thanks Dennis! I have a few copies but they are pretty nice. Please email me if I can help.

FYI that "other guy" was Abner Dalrymple.

oldjudge 03-17-2023 02:53 PM

It’s been a while so I thought I’d bump this. I’d like to say that over the last several years it has been a pleasure to help those trying to add to their Old Judge collections.

Appreciation to Jay

I only recently joined the Forum and just picked up on this thread. I want to thank Jay and all for the book as it has been invaluable over the last 6 years as I continue to add to my Old Judge collection as finances permit. I will email you Jay.

oldjudge 04-16-2023 03:19 PM

Thanks for the kind words, Harvey! Look forward to trying to help you add to your collection.

I'm out but there is a nice one in the current LOTG

oldjudge 04-26-2023 03:59 PM

I've seen more PSA graded Old Judges lately. Is anyone here working on a registry set?

shoreball51 04-27-2023 06:15 PM

Humorous question Jay but observation so true.

autograf 04-28-2023 06:27 AM

https://www.psacard.com/psasetregistry/composite/463

Interestingly there's one person with a 53% completed player set in the PSA registry. It has some nice cards in it. Looks like 281 cards out of 523.

oldjudge 04-28-2023 11:32 AM

Full set is a tough/impossible task but a HOF registry set makes a lot of sense.

felada 04-28-2023 12:24 PM

Jay did you get my email?

oldjudge 04-28-2023 01:18 PM

I did—I will get back later today

oldjudge 05-13-2023 10:43 AM

oldjudge 06-12-2023 09:26 AM

Just a periodic bump--If you need it I very well may have it. It is always fun to help a collector looking for a rare card he or she needs.
