Crazy Ruth Real/Fake Story on Facebook
This guy on Facebook submitted what he thought was a Babe Ruth reprint to COMC. They processed it as authentic. Now he's trying to make sense of it all.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...a219579fd0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...7b3512d00e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...bbcc006d51.jpg

Renata reprint would have black ink on the back. The centering and the big borders could be a red flag, you usually don't see that on most 181's. I hope it's real for his sake, would make a nice story, I'd pull it and grade it.

pretty damn nice if it is authentic, that's for sure

Not to say that this is, but I'm convinced half of the people that post "Is this real? I bought it at an Estate sale..." here on this site are just testing the waters to see if their fake passes muster so that they scam someone on ebay.

This is a well known novelty card. The stain patterns on the back are a dead giveaway. I'll try to dig up some old threads that discuss these cards.
EDIT: I don't see the thread with a quick search, but I uploaded a photo of the back of my copy of this card. You can see that the faux staining matches up. This set of 'reprints' are, or at least were, extremely popluar with scammers on ebay, which is why I bought a set when I first started collecting '33s so that I would know what to look for. If any prewar collector had this in hand they would know in a second that it isn't genuine. The guy on Facebook had it right, except for the fact that it isn't an '83 Renata. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...4d719477_z.jpg EDIT2: Here's a thread RE the yellow Ruth. https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=303368 |
