Judges 58th HR

If Judge surpasses Maris, do you think Maris cards would decline?

I highly doubt it. The circumstances and his journey to 61 were pretty impressive and historic. Judges cards will (and are) increasing, but I don't think it will have an effect on Maris cards.

Tyruscobb 09-18-2022 02:02 PM

Judge’s pursuit may even boost Maris’ cards in short-term. All this exposure is putting Maris back in the headlines.

I agree I think they would go up

If anything it might draw more people to his card as people realize the story , the effort, and the longevity of the American League record

In my mind, if he hits a few more HRs he will hold the all time season home run record since he is not doing it on steroids.

I think that rather than just breaking the AL record is the reason for all the interest.

BobC 09-18-2022 03:51 PM

And that was only the Yankees 146th game this season. If he can get to 61 homers by their 154th game, and then add at least one more to get to 62+ by the end of the season, that would in my mind take out both Ruth and Maris from the record books (at least for non-PED users), and remove the need/reference of an asterisk. He's got 8 games to tie/beat Ruth, and 16 games to tie/beat Maris.

It sure looks like he's going to get them both the way he's been going. He's averaged a home run over every 2.474 games so far over this season. So just keeping to that average he'd be on track to hit another 6 or so homers this year. But he's really been on fire lately it seems, so if he can keep it going, who knows where he may end up. Great season and achievement for sure.

Great analysis. I totally agree 👍

I hate the Yankees, but I'm rooting for him to do it in 154 team games.

oldjudge 09-19-2022 02:16 AM

I don't think being or not being a Yankee fan has anything to do with rooting for Judge. He just seems like a nice guy on the verge of making history. The fact that he is playing in New York, other than having the advantage of a short RF fence, is a disadvantage because of the constant media attention. If Judge played in Kansas City or Tampa then I think there would be considerably less pressure on him. I also like Judge because if you didn't know he was a baseball player and someone asked you to guess what sport he played baseball would probably not be in your top five guesses. I would probably guess football, basketball, or even wrestling before baseball. It's like he is miscast in the sport and yet having one of the greatest seasons ever.
As an aside, I believe that anyone who thinks Ohtani is the MVP this season is delusional. What is his value? When he is there the Angels miss the playoffs by 20 games. Stick Zippy the monkey in his uniform and the Angels miss the playoffs by 40 games--what difference does it make?

Maris versus Judge values ?

Maris Rookie card = !958 Topps Card

Judge Rookie Card + Too many to count.

So can the vintage 1958 Maris RC be less desirable ? (if so please why)

packs 09-19-2022 07:14 AM

Judge is also only a point behind Arraez for the batting title as well. Everyone seems to be caught up in the home run race that no one is talking about him potentially winning a Triple Crown this year too.

This thread needed a card so don’t bash me to much for the modern card.. and yes it’s one of his 500 or so rc’s. That’s why I Rajah in my corner!!

Unfortunately I really don’t see maris prices increasing significantly, maybe for a month or two at most. Roger will continue to gradually go up with all the other vintage.

vansaad 09-19-2022 04:32 PM

This is my favorite Judge card out there. Not a rookie card, but great looking and a difficult to find short print.

The current incarnation of Stadium Club has so many great photos every year, of current and past players.

Agreed. I don't get into much modern, but that 2018 short print run has piqued my interest. Some really striking images:

I usually only buy the old-timers if I don't get them in a single box every year, but I need to pick up that Scherzer. Some of the best baseball card photos are in this line now.

Not to get too far off track....

How did a player of this talent languish in the minor leagues until age 25?

He was in the minors less than 3 years. College + injuries in 2013, the Yankees didn’t hold him back or anything.

At a glance his first 6 years of baseball do not seem predictive of a great major leaguer

When he first came up, I just knew him as the freakishly big guy. Now I don’t have to ask my pals who he is when he comes up :D. I hope he breaks it, good for him.

By then the games will probably be played by remotely controlled robots or some android-like human-mechanical fusion, with pitches coming in at well over 120-130 MPH+, and hitters sending balls over fences now 500-600+ feet away. And people will go, "Aaron who?" to the question. The only thing that may not change by then is them still using Lena Blackburne's mud to rub all the baseballs. That is of course if the oceans don't rise enough by then to completely flood the secret location of the mud. :D

If he breaks the record at home I'm not sure there will even be a "ticket" to the game. The last few years every game I've gone to I've used an e-ticket for entry. I don't even remember seeing someone there with a hard ticket.

Pretty lame if all you left the game with was a QR code to show people.

Does an option to even purchase an old-fashioned hard copy ticket still exist at all MLB parks today? If so, I can see some people making inquiries about games he's going to be playing in on how to possibly swap or exchange their electronic tickets for paper ones. Heck, I can even see some people walking up to the ticket windows then before one of his games, if it doesn't sell out, and just buying a bunch of the cheapest seat tickets available. And then turn around and sell them if he ends up hitting an historic homer in that game.

packs 09-21-2022 09:53 AM

I don't think there are tickets though, is what I'm saying. Not even on the day of. I haven't seen a person walking around with a ticket in years.

My aunt is a Giants (NFL) season ticket holder. She went through hell with them to keep being issued paper tickets. But 99% of people don't get them.

A2000 09-21-2022 09:59 AM

If Judge was using the stuff Mcgwire, Bonds and Sosa used, he'd be at 80+ home runs right now

Wow, that sure changes things for ticket collectors.

If there are no paper tickets for a game he hits an historic homer in, watch someone figure out how to save their electronic ticket, and sell it like an NFT maybe. Can only imagine how that would sit with ticket collectors.

packs 09-21-2022 10:20 AM

I assume the Yankees might do some dead stock offer where they allow e-ticket holders to exchange them for hard copy tickets after the fact. I feel like similar things have been done for other events.

But that's kind of bogus if you ask me.

Breaking Maris' homerun record (the real single season record in many people's books), winning the triple crown, and winning the MVP all in the same year is a legendary season!

I'm rooting for them all to occur.

College kid, late bloomer. He wasn’t even really considered a baseball guy going into college. A’s drafted him out of High School in the 31st round just on his size and athleticism, and he opted for college instead.

He was considered a big reach for the Yankees at the end of the 1st round when he finished up at Fresno State. They were hoping they could turn his raw tools into a high ceiling once he committed to the sport. I was skeptical when they drafted him. I’m glad I was wrong. They hit the jackpot in the 1st round, once every decade or so.

I got this from a friend at a Yankees - Twins spring training game at Hammond Stadium, Fort Myers, a few years ago. My buddy told me, "Hang on to this. If he makes it like I think he's going to, it might be worth something down the road."

Edit: this pic is from the internet, but mine is identical.

The beauty of these kind of records chases it brings the current record holder to the front of peoples minds so it brings the past back to life and helps many to learn and respect past players that maybe they did not know or knew but have not thought about in a long time.
