Bowman Gum Inc. - Research help needed
Hello all,
I am working on a project that focuses on Jacob Warren Bowman's gum company, specifically the processes and practices used to design and manufacture their cards. I am particularly interested in the 1953 Bowman Color set. If anyone here can provide any information, or can suggest individuals or resources that may be of help, I would greatly appreciate it! - Alex |
Good post, 53B color is the first set to use photographic images, they also used Kodachrome film which was super expensive back then, but that's the reason the images look so captivating. It's also the reason they cut the set in half and went B&W the following year.
I'm always curious about the artists that rendered the images before 53, to me the 51B Mays is high art and I'd love to know who painted it. |

Hi Alex
The BOWMAN GUM Co. goes back to the mid-1930's. Warren Bowman worked with the George Moll Advertising Agency of Philadelphia to create all these great Sportscards and Non-Sportscards from 1937 - 1955. The Moll Agency employed 12 artists, who created the artwork for the 1939 - 1941 PLAY BALL's and 1948 - 1955 BOWMAN"S. I did a lot of research back in the early 1980's and published several articles on this subject. Regarding the 1953 BB set, try to get my article in the 1986 BASEBALL CARDS Magazine. You will find it quite interesting. https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...erReese50x.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...wmanMantle.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...anBBmagArt.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...eetLarge50.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...5thSheet6x.jpghttp://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...hSheet6xxA.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...seriesheet.jpg TED Z T206 Reference . |
Ted, thanks so much for reaching out! Yes I am VERY familiar with your article. It seems to be the only detailed piece I have been able to find on the subject. I tried sending you a direct message, but not sure if it went through. Would love to pick your brain about it some more if you are willing!
