National sites announced
Drumroll please . . . .
FUTURE NATIONAL SITES ANNOUNCED The results of the ballot sent to eligible voters are in and the NSCC Board of Directors is pleased to announce the sites for future events. 2023 Chicago (Rosemont) July 26-30, 2023 2024 Cleveland IX Center July 24-28, 2024 2025 Chicago (Rosemont) July 30-August 3, 2025 |
Sure there will general approval of this. I think three years in a row in the midwest is dull and will probably supress the Cleveland turn out, but I'm not a dealer and have no skin in the game. I would have put the third in the west (CA) or southwest somewhere.

I'd have a much better chance of selling the National to my wife if it was a joint vacation to say Denver, Austin, Santa Fe, San Fran, Memphis, etc... basically anywhere other than New Jersey, Cleveland, and Chicago (which is a great town, but not every two years). |

IF the Cleveland date was in Rosemont it would be better. But this is not bad to me. Of course if it were in Dallas I could just hop over there at lunch :)
Peckinpaugh is cool with it too.. . |
For as much as I love Chicago as a city, I can't stand that venue or area. While it's incredibly convenient for its purpose (a huge bonus), there's nothing to do in that area. It's an absolute bore. I was usually too burnt out after being at the show and just not in the mood for lengthy travels afterward. Even finding something simple to do such as going to a good Mom and Pop diner in the morning isn't anywhere nearby that I could ever find. If you like Mexican food or pricey steak houses, you'll be in heaven, but that's not for everyone.
Cleveland...I do like the venue here a lot more than in Chicago. Love the wide open floor plan which is extremely easy to navigate. Parking is dead simple, plentiful and affordable. From a purely personal perspective, I've had better fortune in at Cleveland Nationals versus those held in Chicago. Not fond of that city, however, and have always had a bit of a drive between venue and hotel if I recall. I can never wait to be on my way out of town. As someone posted in the other National thread, it wouldn't be such a bad idea to do an interchange with Chicago--fresh city--Chicago--fresh city, etc. Perhaps another idea would be Chicago--fresh city--Cleveland, etc. |
I am personally of the opinion that much like ComicCon and many other events just parking the show in one place (Chicago) is perfectly fine.
We've gone ad nauseum over this topic and I suspect after many of us are long gone, we'll still be going ad nauseum over this topic but remember there are only "x" amount of places which meet the current group's requirements and we don't yet know if the new management's group is going to be the same way. If so, we're limited to our choices, and we can say what we want and many of us (including me over the years do) but for various BUISNESS reasons our choices are limited. Rich |
On the other hand, the porn industry has held their convention in the same place as far back as I can remember (Vegas), and no one's going to argue that they haven't prospered over the years.

(Maybe not. It's a sportscard convention, not just baseball...) |

No Wrigley Field games during the 2023 show. (:

If they’re not gonna move it around the country, then just put it permanently in Chicago. I don’t understand this lame, half-assed every other year garbage.

Cleveland is the Paris of Southern Ohio

Ohh boy, can't wait for a crowded Rosemont filled with more corporate booths. That convention hall is going to feel small quick.
Cleveland has much cheaper hotel and food options and the convention hall and parking blows away Rosemont. Sure would be nice to give another city a try though...any city. Feel for the people in the south or west coast. |
National
I have attended Nationals in Chicago, Cleveland and Houston ( I was living in Houston at the time) My wife accompanied to one in Chicago and one Cleveland. She won't go back to Chicago: Too much traffic, hard to get around etc.) We had a great time in Cleveland. The hotel shuttled us to the show and picked us up. We went to the Football Hall of Fame in Canton and the President McKinley homestead in Canton on our way back. She likes to go but, now would like to see a different venue. (We were all set for Baltimore but it was cancelled) I was stationed near Baltimore when I was in the Army and was looking forward to it.
I guess I'm just tired of Chicago. |
While moving the National around I think would be great, I can certainly understand why they stay in the Northeast corner and continue to rotate between the 4 current cities. Below is a break down of the dealers from this years national by name and booths. NY, NJ, PA combined are top 3 and make up 30%. Why not have it where dealers are? Also below is the US Census map from 2020. Again, population density looks to be in the northeast. Why not have it where most people are? To me it is only common sense to keep it in that area from a business standpoint.

Interesting breakdown. But for those of us hoping for something on the Western Coast, it appears that dealers from CA, OR, WA, AZ and NV accounted for 22 dealers and 45 tables, just slightly better than IL.
And I'm certain both numbers would increase if there was a something out here where it all started in the first place. Just my 2cents. |

I'd love if it was out in the middle of nowhere in a massive Old barn.
Obviously this would never work, the infrastructure just wouldn't be there. You would have to have it near a big city (few hour drive maybe from the site itself) kinda like a state fair type deal. Would make the experience so much more enjoyable and you could bring family too. Say there's a petting zoo and food trucks etc. Just can't imagine a better time. |

Future National sites
I knew it wouldn't take long for the negativity. For the first (and only)
time in my life, I wish I was more proficient at inserting memes and priceless photo'ed moments into comments. Here's what I'd go with: 1) a meme of a violin, to go along with the sad "music" some of you are playing 2) the hilarious image of Michael Jordan crying 3) a meme of a rope so those of you who need to do so, can pee up it See you in Cleveland- hopefully your refined, urbane natures can take it! I am happy it is returning to Cleveland. Six hour drive from D.C. Big open floor plan Nice big parking lot Plenty of hotels off of the 480. I stayed in Westlake last time. I have no need to socialize after the show and can fend for myself though I have friends who went to med school and law school out there who will know good restaurants. The only plusses for Chicago The parking is cheap at the CTA station lot with a 10 minute walk to Rosemont. Once you drive a few miles north on North River Rd there are plenty of restaurants and quite a few hotels that are priced a lot more reasonable than across the street. Last year I stayed at a Home2 Suites (Hilton property) about 20 minutes north at about 1/3 the price of those nearby. The restaurant area on the other side of the parking garage behind the Embassy Suites is not too bad. Some reasonable choices as long as you don't go to Fogo de Chao (I've been to the one in D.C. multiple times on the companies dime $$$). The big negative for Chicago is that it is usually Lollapalooza weekend which means traffic will be horrible if you are trying to head south. I remember taking Thatcher Ave/First Ave aka Rte 171 all the way down to Midway to get to the highway so I could head east then south to Indianapolis. That took a few hours. |
As we discussed on multiple threads.
The locations are what they are. I am a little disappointed only because they had a chance to bring it to more people by rotating it but chose not to. Others like me like to do different activities when I go places like this but now cannot except for the activities in these areas vs thru out the country different stadiums etc to visit Good facilities so at least that is good and I will be there next year |

Well at least the state of Maine is represented

I don't travel large distances often but when I do, I like to also partake in a "food tour" and try foods that the area is known for. With that said I nominate Kansas City, MO so that along with the card show, I can also have a weekends worth of good BBQ.

For those who might not have caught this slight update -- it's the I/X Center for Cleveland and not the downtown convention center

For people that say some of the dealers wont set up if its west of the Mississippi, so what? Its not like there wouldn't be other dealers to take their place for that year. Once every 5 years do a Dallas, Vegas, California stop in the rotation.
