Mets retire no 24
Obviously Willie Mays was pretty broken down when he got to the Mets, but was nice when then the Mets retired his number today. Any recognition of Willie Mays is a great thing in my book.

Yea, he was terrible for the Mets.
Rickey Hendeson also wore #24 for the Mets. For me, the best Mets to wear the number were Art Shamsky and Ed Charles. Mike |

In a way it may in part be a tribute to his New York years with the Giants. As I vaguely recall from childhood, his move to the Mets was viewed as a homecoming.

This was the fulfillment of a promise made by Mets owner Joan Payson. She promised to retire Willies number, who was her favorite player, unfortunately she died before it would happen. Classy move by Steve Cohen.

Either way it was well done.
