OT (a little bit)... 1949 Leaf Musial

2 Attachment(s)
A bit newer than I normally collect. Just picked this up and wanted to get some thoughts on it. I imagine it's probably from a binder and/or soaked?
Seller guaranteed a numerical grade...I imagine 1 to 1.5...?
I noticed some print lines in the border on the top left, front, which I think are kind of cool. Some other ones have that too.

Beautiful Musial Leon!

I would guess a 1, maybe a 1.5 is a correct assessment. I have a Jackie that suffers from similar issues, and similar centering, that graded a 1.

Hasn't Ted Z taught us anything? It's a 1949 Leaf Musial.

Carter08 08-08-2022 04:14 PM

If it gets dinged for anything like the registration or maybe being soaked, whatever. It’ll be an awesome 1 or 1.5. Full card with razor sharp corners in my humble opinion. Presents great.

1949 LEAF Stan "The Man" Musial variations with three shades of Blue. I think Stan is the only BB player to hit 5 HR's in one day (in a double-header).

HEY TED Z! Actually Nate Colbert duplicated the feat. In an unbelievable coincidence, he was a little boy who was in attendance at the DH where Stan originally accomplished the feat!

Nice card but define "similar centering".

That's pretty cool. Just pulled up the box scores from Nate's historic day on August 1, 1972. Five homers against five different pitchers. 7-9, 5 HR, 13 RBI. Woah.

Great card, sir, soaked or otherwise. A great ballplayer, and by all accounts, a great guy too. My mother was a huge Brooklyn Dodgers fan, having worked at the Brooklyn Naval Shipyard (where my 2nd ship, USS Independence CV-62, was later built) and she went to games at Ebbets Field during WW2. After they moved to LA, and broke her baseball heart, she loved Stan "The Man" and the Cardinals, just up the Mississippi River about 300 miles or so from Memphis.

This performance was insane. After telling Don Zimmer that his back was sore and he might not be able to play that day, Nate Colbert hit a solo shot, two two-run blasts, a three-run dinger and a grand slam before the night was over. And apparently he barely missed another two-run homer when he walked after hitting one in the upper deck just foul of the left field foul pole.

Might? have had tape removed from the front, with signs of the solvent on the rear?? just a guess.

I was just going by what OldCardboard says. Two different dates on backs...1948 and 1949.... doesn't really matter much to me.

edited to add, I misinterpreted the OldCardboard Site. It does indeed say 1949 for both copyright dates. (I will stick to pre war now)

Definition: Both my Jackie and that Musial have excellent centering, the Musial even better than mine. I was pointing out the similarities in relation to the grade I received. Does that help?

G1911 08-08-2022 08:25 PM

A 1949 issue, presented erroneously as a 1948 set for the last half century, and usually discussed in the pre-1946 section. The Premiums placed in the boxes have long been recognized correctly as 1949 though. Leaf dating gets complicated.

It would probably get a 1. Nice card.

Yes, I corrected myself up there. 1949 it is...and I think a 1 also..thanks for the kudos

I do love the centering on it....

Musial's 5 HR's

I have the two scorecards from his 5-HR doubleheader in 1954. I went to his Stan The Man Inc. offices to have them autographed and he was there at the time. I got to sit with him for about 10 minutes while he signed and reminisced about those games. Just hearing him talk about the various at bats like they happened yesterday was an experience I wish I could have videotaped. For a lifelong Cardinals fan, it was a religious experience. "I could have had six - I pinned Mays against the wall on one of my outs." "I never tried to hit home runs but I sure did on that last at bat, and I popped up to first" and then he laughed that famous laugh. What a warm, genuine American hero. That nickname is absolutely perfect. So is that '49 Leaf image. One of my favorites.

bobbyw8469 08-09-2022 07:14 AM

Looks good to me. It probably won't grade very high, but should command a premium if graded. You know...one of those "eye appeal" things. Are you flipping it or keeping it though?

Great card

I have never liked cards in the 1949 Leaf set because of the prevalent registration issues. In fact it drives this "tolerant to just about everything in the vintage world" collector nuts to look at their blurry images. Though if they all looked in focus like Ted's middle example, I think I would be a convert.

Hey Brian

As you know, the 1949 LEAF set is a really tough set to complete; and, especially with all the images of the 100+ cards in it perfectly registered.

It's a real challenge (took me many years to complete it with excellent images and correct colors.). Here are some of my favorite cards in my set.

Stan Musial

Stan "The Man" Musial in his classic stance. Just a friendly bump before this thread disappears off the front page.

Plus I have a story to tell regarding this 1949 BOWMAN card. It is the very first card in my collection that I had graded.
In 1999, at the Fort Washington Philly Show, I submitted it to PSA to be graded. It came back to me with a tag stating:
"evidence of trimmed".
I spoke to the PSA "honcho", telling him "NO WAY". That this card dates back before anyone thought of "trimming" BB
cards.
He responded: "That's just your opinion..... what counts is our opinion !"

I was mad. At the other end of the showroom was a new Grading Co. (SGC). They graded it, and I was mighty pleased :)

I'd be very surprised if anyone ever completed anything like a Master Set.

I haven't even found images for some that must exist, and still find images of types that are sort of transitional or maybe just new to me like the on in the original post.
